Designer Song Toan made surprising revelations about the plain white ao dai, a design considered "the most unlucky", that Miss Huong Giang chose for the National Costume competition at Miss Universe 2025.
Sharing with reporters about Huong Giang's national costumes on the afternoon of November 19, designer Song Toan said: "Smooth white ao dai is the most unfortunate type of ao dai because it can easily reveal the wearer's flaws. However, with many years of technique and skills, we have completed a white ao dai with the "fit" of Huong Giang's body every thousand sentence.
Huong Giang has standard body measurements like ma-no-canh, so a one-time sewing design is achievable, without having to edit any details. We completed the outfit in 1 day," designer Song Toan revealed.
The designer expressed great surprise because before the contest, Huong Giang's team contacted to order a white ao dai but did not specify the purpose or context of wearing the outfit. Before the National Costume competition, when Huong Giang shared the photo of wearing a white ao dai for this competition, designer Song Toan only knew.
Compared to the grand and elaborate national costume costumes that required a lot of effort and cost to complete, Huong Giang's white ao dai design is considered by many audiences to be much "cheaper".
Designer Song Toan refused to reveal the price of the design because he thought that "smooth white ao dai is considered a heritage of the Vietnamese people, the costume is a higher cultural symbol when the price is not announced".
Among the elaborate and magnificent costumes, the simple white ao dai stands out with its elegant, feminine, pure and very Vietnamese beauty. The image of a female student riding a bicycle, wearing a conical hat evokes the closeness, rusticity and childhood memories of many generations of Vietnamese people.
