On the occasion of the Traditional Day of Vietnamese Diplomacy (August 28), for the first time, the exhibition "Nguyen Dynasty Relations: Between the East - West Wind" will be exhibited.
The exhibition introduces to the public hundreds of unique documents about diplomatic activities during the first 50 years of independence and autonomy under the Nguyen Dynasty (1802 - 1858), before the French colonialists opened fire to invade and transform our country. become a colony. In particular, there are mainly documents selected from the Nguyen Dynasty's Imperial Records - World Documentary Heritage.
With a unique 3D space, the exhibition will take visitors on an emotional journey through two parts.
Part 1 is called Closing the West. The records show that the Nguyen Dynasty kings from Gia Long to Tu Duc in their relations with other countries consistently implemented a "self-defense" and "closed" policy.
However, the Nguyen Dynasty did not completely "break ties" with anything related to the West (mainly England, France, and America). The Nguyen Dynasty kings once sent delegations to review the situation in the West, buy essential goods, guns and ammunition from the West, and learn about science and technology...
Besides, Western ships also received help and welcome from the Nguyen Dynasty many times. Some Confucianists even presented a proposal for "friendly relations" with the West.
Part 2 has content about "Opening the East". While implementing the "non-Western" policy, the Nguyen Dynasty king prioritized developing relationships with Eastern countries such as Cambodia, Van Tuong, Siam, Nam Chuong, Thuy Xa, Hoa Xa... especially with neighboring China.
According to the National Archives Center I, learning about the diplomatic activities of our ancestors is also a way to "clarify the turbulence" and draw out values for contemporary life.
