Vietnam re-elected as a member of the UNESCO 2005 Intergovernmental Committee

Vietnam is the first country since the birth of the UNESCO Convention in 2005 to join the Intergovernmental Committee for two consecutive terms.

From June 18 to 20 (local time), at UNESCO headquarters (Paris, France), the 10th General Assembly session of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the diversity of Cultural Expresses took place.

Vietnam is currently a member of the Intergovernmental Committee for the 2021-2025 term. This is the third time Vietnam has been elected as a member of the UNESCO Convention Intergovernmental Committee 2005.

This demonstrates the Council's recognition of Vietnam's efforts and achievements in implementing the 2005 Convention, and at the same time demonstrates Vietnam's active and prestigious contributions to the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization.

Speaking at the plenary session, Dr. Nguyen Phuong Hoa emphasized that the 2005 Convention, which was adopted 20 years ago, is a strong act of the will and collective efforts of international solidarity.

She affirmed that cultural expressions are the core of identity, representing our communities and aspirations. Cultural diversity is a common heritage of humanity, which needs to be protected and promoted for today's and future generations.

Dr. Nguyen Phuong Hoa affirmed that Vietnam's policies always take people as the center, build a healthy cultural environment, nurture creativity, ensure the people's cultural rights, culture is one of the pillars of sustainable development.

The 10th session of the General Assembly is of special significance as it takes place on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the 2005 Convention being adopted. Representatives of 157 member states and the European Union have assessed the implementation of the Convention since the 9th General Assembly session (2023) to date, through the performance reports of the Intergovernmental Committee and the Secretariat of the Convention, and National Newspapers with a record number of 110 reports received in the 2 years 2023-2024. This is the basis for developing the Fourth Global Report on reshaping Cultural Policies for Creativity.

The General Meeting also reviewed and evaluated the activities of the International Fund for Cultural diversity, the recommendations of the two International Expert Groups on the digital environment and preferential treatment for developing countries.

Right after the General Assembly session, the 20th anniversary of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the diversity of Cultural Express was solemnly and impressively held at UNESCO headquarters. The event is considered to be of great significance right before the World Conference on Sustainable Development and Cultural Policy (MONDIACULT 2025) in September in Barcelona.

In particular, within the framework of the upcoming official visit to Vietnam, UNESCO Director General Ms. Aud Aud Audit Azoulay will attend the opening ceremony of the 3rd ASEAN - Da Nang Film Festival (DANAFF) - one of the events nominated by Vietnam to participate in a series of activities and events celebrating the 20th anniversary of the 2005 Convention worldwide.
