Book copyright infringement is complicated
In the context of strongly developing digital technology, book copyright issues face many unprecedented challenges. With social networking platforms as an operating space, copyright infringement is complicated and increasingly sophisticated. This situation has a negative impact on the creative environment, especially on the development of cultural industries.
Currently, just type the phrases "cheap book warehouse", "discounted books", "total cheap book warehouse", "liquidation books"... on social networking platforms, you can find products. Thousands of results, with very cheap selling prices. Many sites sell books for 19,000 VND/book, any set of 3 books costs 50,000 VND.
The spread of fake books leads to a great danger, which is that over time the habit of not respecting author's rights is formed among readers. In 2018, writer Nguyen Nhat Anh shared that many readers gave him fake books to sign but did not know that they had bought infringing books. On such occasions, he refused to sign fake books and give cards to readers.
In Vietnam, millions of people use the Internet every day, creating opportunities to open new directions in accessing reading culture and raising awareness about books. However, the popularity of digital platforms also poses the problem of solving the problem of infringement of copyright and related rights in cyberspace.
To promote the development of the publishing industry, Mr. Nguyen Nguyen - Director of the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution - needs to consider copyright protection as one of the two pillars, along with developing reading culture. At the same time, readers also need to boycott fake and pirated books by not buying, selling, exchanging, promoting fake or pirated books and looking to buy books at reliable and reputable addresses. When readers are aware that buying real publications is protecting their own interests, then the problem of counterfeit and pirated publications will be repelled.
Many challenges
At the Conference to deploy Publishing and Publications Release in 2024, MSc. Pham Thi Kim Oanh - Deputy Director of the Copyright Department (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) - said that there are many causes leading to violations of copyright and related rights.
"There are still those who pursue profit, for personal gain, but violate the legal rights of authors and rights owners. Organizations and individuals who exploit and use the product and the public are still not aware of it." responsibilities and obligations regarding copyright and related rights. Many people still buy cheap books even though they may or may not know that the books are copyrighted. Some authors and rights owners are not familiar with them. We have not applied legal regulations to protect our legitimate rights and interests. Handling violations of copyright and related rights is still limited and not enough to deter and prevent", Ms. Pham Thi Kim Oanh evaluated.
Previously, book copyright infringement "circumvented the law" in the form of pirated printing and selling fake books. Up to now, forms of copyright infringement are more unpredictable, as young readers mostly turn to buying and selling books on e-commerce platforms.
In addition, short videos reviewing books, labeling best-selling books indiscriminately... on social networking platforms make the situation of book copyright infringement even more complicated, making it difficult for readers to distinguish between streams. information.
Many individuals and organizations also use domain name registration websites and server locations abroad, and online publishing applications (OTT) to provide pirated e-book products. Some parties also take advantage of digital technology, such as artificial intelligence, to create counterfeit works but do not comply with regulations on copyright and related rights.
