After many delays, NASA finally launched an Artemis SLS rocket test, getting closer to the goal of sending humans back to the Moon.

NASA's new moon rocket successfully took off in its first test flight with three safes on board on November 16, 2022.

The test launches have taken the US one step closer to bringing athletes back to the moon's surface, the first time since the end of the Apollo program 50 years ago.

The missile will push an unmanned Orion spacecraft into a wide orbit around the moon, then return to Earth and crash into the Pacific Ocean in December this year, according to AP.

History of multiple delays

After many delays in the test launch and being cost billions of dollars, the SLS Space Phong System rocket took off from the Kennedy Space Center.

The Orion spacecraft was placed on top of the rocket, ready to plunge out of Earth's orbit and towards the moon less than two hours after the flight.

The launch marks the beginning of NASA's Artemis lunar exploration program, named after the twin sisters in the myth of Apollo.

The US aerospace Administration is aiming to send four crew members flying around the Moon on the next flight in 2024 and bring humans back to the Moon's surface by 2025, at the earliest.

NASA is waiting until the end of this test flight to introduce the astronauts who will participate in the next flight, who will follow in the footsteps of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin of Apollo 11.

Most of NASA's squad, consisting of 42 active astronauts and 10 young students, is being trained to prepare for further missions.
