On the afternoon of September 19, the People's Committee of Nam Tra My district reported a preliminary report on the damage caused by storm No. 4.
According to local authorities, from the afternoon of September 17 until now, the whole district has had heavy to very heavy rain, water levels in rivers and streams have risen rapidly and many large landslides have appeared.
The authorities have urgently evacuated 70 households with 257 people (mostly the elderly and children) in residential areas at high risk of landslides to safe shelters.
"The whole commune has about 9 high-risk locations, with about 194 households/nearly 800 people needing to be evacuated. Each location has sent forces to be on duty and monitor the situation. It is forecasted that there will continue to be heavy rain in the coming days, so we are closely monitoring and, if necessary, will promptly evacuate people at night" - Mr. Doan Ngoc Hoai - Vice Chairman of Tra Nam Commune People's Committee, Nam Tra My District informed.
In addition, heavy rain and landslides affected 17 houses (8 houses had landslides and 9 houses had cracked foundations); landslides and rocks flooded 3 remote schools and damaged many inter-commune and inter-village roads.
Worryingly, the serious landslide situation on the route from Tra Tap Commune People's Committee to Rang Chuoi Village, Hamlet 1, Tra Tap Commune has caused traffic congestion. This landslide has drifted close to Lang Luong Village, threatening 22 households with 95 people in this village - the report emphasized.
Speaking with Lao Dong, Mr. Tran Duy Dung - Chairman of Nam Tra My District People's Committee said that the locality has mobilized more than 1,000 police, military and shock troops to participate in preventing and overcoming the consequences of natural disasters.
Up to now, the district has stockpiled about 300 tons of rice, 1,160 boxes of instant noodles, 307 boxes of dry food, bottled water, chemicals, medicine, and fuel at commune warehouses, schools, village warehouses, grocery stores, and among the people.
“Thanks to proactive response to storms and landslides, damage has been minimized. However, the risk of landslides is still very high, due to the steep terrain and the land being “full” of water after the recent consecutive rains.
The government and people always closely monitor and are ready to respond to natural disasters, because the painful lesson from the Tra Leng landslide in 2020 that killed dozens of people is still there" - Mr. Dung cautiously said.
