Emergency evacuation of 51 households
On the afternoon of September 19, Mr. Tran Duy Dung - Chairman of the People's Committee of Nam Tra My district, Quang Nam informed Lao Dong that last night, September 18, the district had heavy rain, the river water rose and flowed rapidly, and many landslides appeared at Rang Chuoi school, village 1, Tra Tap commune, Mang Xoan - Tu Chan residential area, village 4, Tra Cang commune; landslides on the negative slope of DH3 road in Tra Cang commune, DH1 from Tra Don to Tra Leng, the road from Tra Mai to Tra Van - Tra Vinh...
Notably, heavy rain caused the slope behind Rang Chuoi school (village 2, Tra Tap commune) to slide, causing soil to fall in patches, and water from outside to flood into classrooms. To ensure safety, students at this school were given a day off from school from the afternoon of September 18.
“That very night, the locality urgently evacuated 51 households with 164 people (mostly the elderly and children) in residential areas at high risk of landslides to safe shelters,” said Mr. Dung.
By noon today, September 19, the rain had decreased but water from upstream was still pouring in, the risk of landslides was very high due to the steep terrain and the soil had "absorbed" a lot of water - Mr. Dung commented.
Mr. Ngo Tan Lac - Chairman of Tra Cang Commune People's Committee, Nam Tra My District said that new landslides have appeared in the locality, many residential areas and village schools are at risk of landslides. The commune is deploying forces to conduct comprehensive inspections to have timely response plans.
Urgently clear the road, beware of flash floods
After the emergency evacuation at night, people were provided with mosquito nets, blankets, mats, pillows and ensured adequate food and necessities. Currently, the health of the people is guaranteed - according to the representative of the Tra Don commune government, Nam Tra My district.
Nam Tra My district is mobilizing local forces to urgently clear landslides and requesting businesses to bring machinery and vehicles to clear traffic landslides to ensure convenient travel and rescue.
In Phuoc Son district, since the evening of September 18, the amount of water from the streams has been very strong, some roads through Phuoc Thanh, Phuoc Loc, Phuoc My, and Phuoc Cong communes cannot be used due to water overflowing the road surface and flowing rapidly.
A hill in Hamlet 5 of Phuoc Hiep Commune has developed a crack along Highway 14E, with many households living at the foot of the hill. The risk of landslides in this area is very high. The police and local authorities have urgently mobilized households to evacuate to safety.
Colonel Ho Song An - Deputy Director of Quang Nam Provincial Police Department has directed Phuoc Son District Police to continue monitoring, warning, regulating traffic, and blocking to ensure absolute safety of people and property.
Quang Nam Hydrometeorological Center forecasts that from this afternoon, September 19, there will continue to be rain, moderate rain, and locally heavy rain in some places.
The downstream of Thu Bon River in Hoi An continues to rise and peak at alert level 1, with the risk of flash floods on small rivers and streams in mountainous areas; landslides on steep slopes, and land subsidence in mountainous districts.
