On the afternoon of September 30, information from the People's Committee of Lao Cai province said that due to the influence of the circulation of storm No. 10 (Bualoi) causing prolonged heavy rain, combined with floods from upstream, the water level of the Thao River in the Yen Bai bridge area has exceeded the warning level by 3 to 2.4m.
At around 2:00 a.m. on September 30, a sand suction ship drifting freely from upstream collided with the pillars and girders of Yen Bai Bridge, posing a potential risk to affect the quality and safety of the project.
In the face of the above situation, the Department of Construction has issued an urgent request, and the People's Committee of Lao Cai province decided to temporarily ban all vehicles and pedestrians from traveling through Yen Bai bridge (Km280+500, National Highway 37) from 6:00 p.m. on September 30 until further notice.
During this time, vehicles traveling between Yen Bai ward and Au Lau ward are guided through the bridges: Tuan Quan, Bach Lam, Gioi Phien or Van Phu to ensure safety.
The Yen Bai Bridge project, route Km280+500, National Highway 37, was completed and put into operation and use in 1992.
The bridge is 305m long, 12.8m wide, 7m wide (for vehicles), 6 spans, reinforced concrete span structure and steel truss, bridge abutments, and handling piers.
