Da Do canal (An Khanh ward) is parallel to Vo Nguyen Giap street, and has been covered with weeds and garbage for many years. This nearly 2km long canal is about to be dredged to clear the flow, reduce flooding and improve the environment of the area.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the Da Do canal dredging project (from Nguyen Hoang Street to Saigon River) is one of 9 key projects that will start construction on the morning of October 10, invested by the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Management Board, welcoming the 1st Ho Chi Minh City Party Congress, term 2025 - 2030.
Previously, Da Do canal was the main drainage route of the eastern region, leading water to the Saigon and Rach Chiec rivers. However, over time, the canals were narrowed due to silting, many sections were seized, causing the flow to be blocked. Currently, the water in the canal changes color to cloudy and foul, especially on days of strong sunshine or high tides. On both banks, weeds grow wildly, mixed with household waste and construction materials, creating a shabby landscape in the middle of a crowded residential area.
Mr. Nguyen Van Sang (58 years old, living near the canal bank) shared: "Before, the canal water was clear and clear, with lotus blooming. Now the bottle is covered with black water, foul odors, and a lot of mosquitoes. People here just hope the project will be completed soon so that the canals are cleaned and there is no more flooding during heavy rains".
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa (An Phu ward) added: "The binh is so thick that it looks like a lot of grass. Every time it rains, water overflows onto the road, flooding the entire path. I hope the city will soon clear the road so that this area has less odor, less mosquitoes, and the environment is cleaner".
The Da Do canal dredging project is expected to restore natural flow, reduce flooding in the An Khanh - An Phu area, and at the same time open up urban beautification, creating a green space along the canals. According to the investor, after dredging, the canal will be embanked, trees will be planted and a floating garbage collection system will be installed to maintain a clean and beautiful landscape, ensuring sustainable drainage capacity.
The groundbreaking ceremony on the morning of October 10 not only has technical significance but is also an activity to celebrate the 1st Ho Chi Minh City Party Congress, term 2025 - 2030, demonstrating the city's determination in urban beautification, improving the environment and improving the quality of life for people in the East.
