Close-up of nearly 2,000 cages and rafts for aquaculture on rivers in Dong Nai to be cleared soon

Dong Nai - On river routes through Tran Bien and Long Hung wards, there are nearly 2,000 aquaculture cages and rafts about to be cleared.

Currently, on the river routes of Tran Bien and Long Hung wards in Dong Nai City, there are nearly 2,000 cages and rafts (including 536 rafts and 1,428 cages) of 290 households engaged in aquaculture and living on cages and rafts. Of which, 767 people live directly on rafts.

According to the development orientation of Dong Nai City, maintaining cage and raft fish farming areas with high cage density on river routes through the above 2 wards is not suitable for the orientation of modern, civilized and sustainable urban development; and at the same time, it potentially poses a negative impact on water environment quality, urban aesthetics and waterway traffic safety.

On August 27, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Nai City issued a report assessing the current situation of social relations related to the draft resolution stipulating policies to support the clearance of cages and rafts for aquaculture and rafts for living on river routes in Tran Bien and Long Hung wards, Dong Nai City - and said that the termination of cage, raft and raft aquaculture activities is extremely necessary.

Households currently using water surface for aquaculture, living on rafts, have not been assigned or leased water surface by the State according to legal regulations, so they are not eligible for compensation when the State manages and rearranges water surfaces. However, most cage and raft fish farming households have been attached to the profession for a long time, mainly depending on aquaculture activities to generate income and maintain life. The termination of cage and raft fish farming activities will directly affect livelihoods, jobs and living conditions of many households.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Nai City proposed that, in order to help people have a part of the funds to initially stabilize their lives, change careers, create new livelihoods and ensure social security, the submission to the People's Council of Dong Nai City to issue a resolution stipulating policies to support the clearance of aquaculture cages and rafts, rafts for living on river routes in Tran Bien and Long Hung wards is necessary, suitable to the reality and balancing capacity of the local budget.

However, over time, the number of cages and rafts has developed rapidly and is mainly spontaneous, leading to the situation of concentrated farming with too many rafts and cages in a small area in some areas, limiting the flow and reducing the self-cleaning ability of the water environment, leading to the accumulation of waste at risk of local environmental pollution. To solve the above situation, Bien Hoa City People's Committee (formerly) implemented the project "Planning fish raft villages suitable for the ecological landscape on the Dong Nai River". However, due to many objective and subjective reasons, the implementation has not achieved the set goals. Photo: HAC
Việc phát triển nuôi trồng thủy sản lồng, bè, ở trên bè trong thời gian dài đã làm gia tăng áp lực lên môi trường nước, phát sinh lượng lớn chất thải hữu cơ từ thức ăn dư thừa, chất thải từ nuôi thủy sản và sinh hoạt của các hộ dân ở trên bè nguy cơ gây ô nhiễm môi trường nước. Ảnh: HAC

Đồng thời, ảnh hưởng đến mỹ quan đô thị, cảnh quan ven sông và khả năng lưu thông dòng chảy, giao thông thủy nội địa. Ảnh: HAC
The development of cage and raft aquaculture on rafts for a long time has increased pressure on the water environment, generating large amounts of organic waste from excess feed, waste from aquaculture and the daily life of households on rafts, posing a risk of water pollution. Photo: HAC
TP Đồng Nai đang xây dựng chính sách hỗ trợ trực tiếp cho các hộ gia đình, cá nhân nuôi thủy sản lồng, bè; hộ gia đình, cá nhân ở trên bè trên các tuyến sông thuộc phường Trấn Biên và phường Long Hưng. Ảnh: HAC
