The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee requested the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board to propose a capital allocation plan for the periods 2021 - 2025, 2026 - 2030 and 2031 - 2035. At the same time, this unit needs to develop an annual capital allocation plan to ensure project progress.
The Urban Railway Management Board is responsible for completing related procedures to finalize the investment policy for Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong) with ODA capital according to regulations.
New projects also need to be surveyed, have an overall design (FEED) and have a feasibility study report submitted to competent authorities for approval.
After 17 years since its approval, Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) officially came into operation from December 22, 2024, marking an important step forward in the development of public transport in Ho Chi Minh City.
The 19.7 km metro line with 14 stations, connecting the city center with Thu Duc City, is expected to reduce traffic congestion and improve the quality of life for people.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, Metro Line 1 currently carries an average of 50,000 passengers per day.
With a specific mechanism from Resolution 188 of the National Assembly, Ho Chi Minh City aims to synchronously develop the metro system with a total length of 355 km in the next decade.
It is expected that Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong) will start construction in 2025 and be completed in 2030.
In addition, six other metro lines will be deployed with a site clearance roadmap from 2025-2027 and will simultaneously start construction in 2027.
If on schedule, the entire 355 km metro network will be completed by 2035, meeting 40 - 50% of people's travel needs, contributing to building a modern and sustainable public transport system and reducing pressure on road transport infrastructure.
