Military life
On the first day of school, Roon Border Guard Station (Quang Binh Border Guard Command) was filled with laughter when a member of the unit passed the Border Guard Academy entrance exam. That person was Nguyen Anh Vu (18 years old, residing in Nam Lanh village, Quang Phu commune, Quang Trach district, Quang Binh).
More specifically, Vu is the "adopted son" of the station, protected by the unit since 8th grade until now.
Vu was adopted by Roon Border Guard Station after his parents separated. He lived with his paternal grandfather and elderly grandmother. Realizing Vu's extremely difficult circumstances, the station's command decided to take him in and raise him, from studying to living right at the unit.
At the end of 2019, Vu was "sent" to the army to live and study at the station with a private bed and room. Nguyen Anh Vu's life turned a new page with the journey of a "child soldier" right at the station. He was protected and cared for by special "fathers".
Major Nguyen Son Binh - Political Commissar of Roon Border Post - recalled that in the first days of his unit, Vu was only in 8th grade, skinny, 28kg, and had a chronic toothache. The post had to send military doctors as well as mobilize the masses and the Youth Union to take care of his health and physical condition. Thanks to the "fathers" of the post, Vu gained 12kg within a year.
During his days in the army, Vu, like other soldiers, followed the general regulations. Waking up in the morning, eating, living…all followed the gong. Vu was given the privilege of not following the bedtime regulations to study.
“After some difficult days, I gradually got used to and liked the military environment. The officers created favorable conditions for me from studying to living, as long as I followed the rules and regulations of the unit,” Nguyen Anh Vu shared.
The soldier "green uniform"
Realizing that studying is important, in grade 10 alone, his total score at the end of the year was 7.9. During the remaining years living under the roof of Roon Border Post, Vu was an excellent student.
The encouragement of his uncles and brothers in the unit urged Vu to pursue his dream of becoming a border guard soldier. After months of studying hard, Nguyen Anh Vu brought pride to his unit and family when he scored 25.4 points and was admitted to the Border Guard Academy in 2024.
Joy filled the Roon border post, the news of the poor student passing the Border Guard Academy made the fishing village happier than ever. Vu's grandmother - Mrs. Le Thi Tam (64 years old) - choked up upon receiving the news: "Thanks to the station raising him, he has today, I really thank the Party, thank the officers and soldiers of the border post for helping him in the past time".
Major Binh was even happier when the station's "adopted son" achieved the results he has today. Without taking credit for himself, Major Nguyen Son Binh only said that all the achievements were due to Vu's will to study. The soldiers in the station were only the ones who encouraged and supported the student. And the warmest thing was that Vu chose the path of a soldier wearing a "green military uniform".
"In the coming time, we will continue to select children with difficult circumstances, take them home to care for and raise them to support them in continuing with their dreams" - Major Binh said.
