The remaining section of Phong Chau bridge is at risk of collapse and needs to be handled soon

Phu Tho - Faced with the risk that the remaining Phong Chau bridge section could collapse, the Department of Transport has asked for the opinion of the Vietnam Road Administration (Ministry of Transport) on a solution.

As reported, the Investigation Police Agency (IPA) - Phu Tho Provincial Police, when conducting a survey of the remaining Phong Chau bridge (the part connecting to Phung Nguyen commune, Lam Thao district), found that the bridge deck of span number 5 (N5) was tilted outwards towards the Red River (with signs of subsidence of pier T6). Spans number 4, 3, 2 showed signs of being twisted and tilted in the direction of the Red River flow, the expansion joints (connecting the bridge spans) were stretched much more than the original design...

Thereby, the police agency determined that the remaining part of Phong Chau bridge would collapse at any time. To ensure the safety of people's lives and property, on September 26, the Investigation Police Agency - Phu Tho Provincial Police issued Document No. 4837/CV-VPCQCSDT, proposing and recommending to the People's Committee of Phu Tho province to establish a working group to assess the safety of the remaining part of Phong Chau bridge in order to take timely measures.

The document clearly states that at present, the Phu Tho Department of Transport is coordinating with relevant agencies and units to carry out the dismantling and salvage of span number 8 and is surveying to continue dismantling and salvage of span number 7.

Based on the document of the Investigation Police Agency - Phu Tho Provincial Police, Phu Tho Department of Transport reported and requested the Vietnam Road Administration to consider and give opinions on the plan to handle the remaining spans and piers of Phong Chau Bridge.
