On April 7, according to the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center - Institute of Earth Sciences, this unit is still closely monitoring continuous earthquakes occurring in the highlands of Quang Ngai, mainly in Mang But commune, located near the Thuong Kon Tum hydropower reservoir.
Accordingly, on April 5, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.2 occurred at coordinates 14.850° North latitude – 108.219° East longitude, focal depth of about 8.3 km. Disaster risk level: 0.
Previously, at 17:49:17 (Hanoi time) on the same day, another earthquake with a magnitude of 3.7 occurred at coordinates 14.864° North latitude – 108.232° East longitude, focal depth of about 8.1 km.
In recent years, there have been hundreds of large and small earthquakes in the area near the Thuong Kon Tum hydropower reservoir. Experts and scientists believe that earthquakes are likely induced by the large-scale hydropower reservoir storing water.
The trend of earthquakes is increasing, with many earthquakes exceeding the historical milestone of more than 100 years with magnitudes above 5.0.
