According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Anh - Director of the Institute of Geophysics, the earthquake occurred at 6:21 pm, with a depth of about 8km. Although the intensity was not large, due to the shallow depth, the tremors spread far, and people in many areas dozens of kilometers from the epicenter could still feel it clearly.
In addition to localities near the epicenter such as Son Tay, Ba To, Son Ha, shaking was also recorded in eastern Quang Ngai such as Duc Pho, Nghia Hanh, Long Phung, even spreading to the coastal area of My Khe, Dung Quat - about 80km from the epicenter of the earthquake. Many people said that the shaking lasted from 3-5 seconds.
Ms. Pham Thi Y Hoa (Lang Teng village, Ba Dong commune) shared: "This is the first time I clearly feel earthquakes, houses shake quite strongly.
Not only Ms. Hoa, many Quang Ngai people also posted on social networks, saying they felt clear tremors in a few seconds, causing anxiety.
Earlier the same day, at 4:30 PM, this area recorded a 2.7-magnitude earthquake; on the evening of March 20, another 2.6-magnitude earthquake occurred. The earthquakes were all assessed as having a disaster risk level 0 and are being further monitored by the Institute of Geophysics.
From 2021 to now, the Kon Plong area has recorded more than 1,000 earthquakes. According to experts, this is an area with weak earthquake activity, with a maximum intensity not exceeding 5.5 degrees. Most of the tremors are identified as induced earthquakes, related to water storage activities of hydropower reservoirs, increasing pressure on fault zones underground.
