Van Don district, the largest aquaculture hub in Quang Ninh province and the North, has suffered serious damage with 1,200 aquaculture facilities damaged, 130 ships sunk or missing, and more than 32,000 tons of aquatic products about to be harvested lost. Total damage is estimated at VND2,280 billion.
The Aquaculture Development Project of Van Don district to 2030, with a vision to 2040, with a total area of 23,821 hectares, including 91 marine areas, has been integrated into the Provincial Master Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister under Decision No. 80/QD-UBND dated February 11, 2023. This is the basis for the district to arrange farming areas, indicating areas with farming advantages for each key farming object in the area.
Ms. Le Thi Kim Yen - an aquaculture household in Tan Lap village, Quan Lan commune - shared: "My family lost more than 20 billion VND after the storm, both in terms of fish and cages. Before that, we had invested heavily to convert foam buoys to HDPE plastic buoys according to new regulations, but before we could recover the capital, Typhoon Yagi hit. The government's provision of water surface area to households is extremely urgent and is an important factor in completing bank loan procedures and restoring the aquaculture profession."
According to Mr. Dao Van Vu - Vice Chairman of Van Don District People's Committee - as of October 15, the district has handed over over 6,000 hectares of coastal areas to households. The whole district has had 50% of fish cages restored by households compared to the time before storm No. 3 and over 50 households have planted nearly 300 hectares of oysters.
The district is expected to hand over an additional 7,000 hectares of coastal areas to cooperatives and more than 1,000 households this year.
In Quang Yen town, an area with strong aquaculture potential in Quang Ninh, storm Yagi left serious consequences, affecting 455 aquaculture households, causing damage of about 2,300 billion VND, mainly in Hoang Tan, Tan An, Lien Hoa, Lien Vi, and Phong Hai communes.
The town has also just assigned the marine aquaculture area to the first 164 households in Hoang Tan commune, Phong Hai ward, each household is assigned an area of 0.6 ha.
Currently, the town's specialized agencies have gone to the site to count the damage, guide people to repair ponds, cages and handle the environment. The town strives to complete the handover of farming areas to more than 400 households for production reconstruction by mid-November 2024.
