Widespread heavy rain, many rivers exceed alarm level
According to the Hanoi City Technical Infrastructure Management Center, due to the influence of a tropical depression combined with a tropical convergence zone, from the morning of September 14 to the afternoon of September 17, Hanoi experienced widespread heavy rain.
By 2 PM on September 17th, accumulated rainfall in many areas was very high, including Yen So 600.3mm; Hai Ba Trung 598.6mm; Vinh Thanh 531.2mm; My Duc 530.8mm; Cau Giay 473.2mm...
Prolonged heavy rain has caused the water level of drainage rivers to remain at a high level. At Ha Dong bridge, the Nhue River reached 5.28m, exceeding alarm level II by 0.09m. The Tich River exceeded alarm level III by 0.33m, while the Bui River exceeded alarm level III by 0.45m.
Rising river water levels limit the ability of gravity drainage, putting great pressure on the drainage system in the western and southwest areas of the city.
Faced with the above situation, the management unit has mobilized more than 2,500 workers and more than 200 vehicles and equipment on duty according to the highest scenario. Large pumping stations are operating to support lowering water levels.
Dao Nguyen pumping station operates 25/25 pumps; Cau Sa pumping station operates 11/11 pumps; Yen Nghia pumping station operates 7/10 pumps.
By 2 pm on September 17, when the rain decreased, most of the flooded points in the central area of Hanoi City had receded, and traffic was basically back to normal.
Many prolonged flooding points in 2025 will no longer recur
Representatives of the Hanoi City Technical Infrastructure Management Center said that compared to the floods in 2025, the city's drainage capacity has improved thanks to a number of local flood control works that have just been put into operation.
Many "black spots" of flooding in 2025 such as Phung Hung, Hang Da market, Tong Dan, Phan Boi Chau - Ly Thuong Kiet, Nguyen Khuyen, Nguyen Trai, Vu Trong Phung, Ecohome... did not record flooding during this rain.
In the areas of Vo Chi Cong, Ciputra, Hoa Bang, Tran Binh, Pham Hung, Co Linh..., in 2025, it will take 4-10 hours for the water to recede completely. During this rain, the water receding time is shortened to about 30 minutes to 2 hours after the rain subsides.
The To Huu - Luong The Vinh area also experienced localized flooding when the amount of water poured in was large. However, thanks to the lake and Dong Bong 2 pumping station participating in regulation, by 2 pm on September 17, this area had dried up, and traffic was restored.
Currently, some low-lying points in the Nhue River basin such as the Thang Long Avenue service road at tunnels 2, 5, 6, Trieu Khuc, Tay Mo... still have water. The reason is that the Nhue River water level is high, making drainage difficult.
On the afternoon of September 17, the Hanoi City Technical Infrastructure Management Center held a meeting to draw experience and review bottlenecks to continue adjusting the drainage system operation plan.
The unit also proposed that the city continue to invest and complete drainage headworks to improve flood prevention capacity for the West and Southwest of Hanoi.
