During storm No. 3, the Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities (DTNT) of Quang Ninh Province's Secondary and High School suffered damage to more than 10m of fence, garage, gate, playground system, etc. To create conditions for students to return to school soon, in recent days, the school's teachers and staff have worked hard to clean up and stabilize school operations after the storm.
When the reporter arrived at the school, teacher Tran Van Soi - Principal of Quang Ninh Province's Ethnic Minority School - was welding the fence with other teachers and students.
Mr. Soi shared: “It is very difficult to hire workers to repair the fence now. The fence is an important construction item to ensure security and order, and manage students, so I do it right away. Luckily, I know how to weld since I was a teacher at a vocational school. Not only the fence, the teachers also fix minor damages such as electricity, water, etc.
What makes me the happiest is that 100% of the students and teachers staying at the school are safe after the storm. On September 10, the students returned to school, and all activities are gradually returning to normal."
Storm No. 3 also caused heavy damage to Bai Chay High School, Ha Long City. More than 1,200 square meters of corrugated iron roof was blown off, 60 meters of fence collapsed, more than 30 trees were uprooted, and many doors were damaged. Immediately after the storm, the school mobilized 100% of teachers to clean up and overcome the consequences of the storm.
Ms. Bui Thi Ngoc Bach - Principal of Bai Chay High School - said: "With the help of military units, the school's teachers divided into many cleaning teams, prioritizing cleaning and checking the safety conditions of the facilities in the classrooms first. By September 10, the cleaning was basically completed. On September 11, 1,440 students from 32 classes returned to school as usual."
As of the afternoon of September 12, more than 80% of educational institutions in the province have allowed students to return to school. The remaining schools are focusing on cleaning up and overcoming the consequences of storms and floods.
According to incomplete statistics from the Department of Education and Training of Quang Ninh province, storm No. 3 has caused high schools to lose more than 7,600 square meters of roof; nearly 400 classrooms had broken windows, 110 classrooms had collapsed ceilings; nearly 500 trees in the school were broken... Many educational institutions suffered heavy damage such as: Co To High School, Quan Lan High School, Bai Chay High School and the Center for Continuing Education and Vocational Training of the province... The Department of Education and Training is continuing to review the damage.
Immediately after storm No. 3, the Department of Education and Training of Quang Ninh requested that, based on the actual weather situation and the impact after the storm in the locality, with the spirit of making the highest effort, educational activities return to normal to ensure the time frame for the 2024-2025 school year of preschool education, general education and continuing education in the province, educational institutions, and heads of educational institutions proactively plan to organize learning for students. At the same time, educational activities at school should only be organized when safety conditions are guaranteed, and there should be a plan to make up for students if they have to miss school.
In the 2024-2025 school year, Quang Ninh province will have about 637 preschool and general education facilities with nearly 359,000 students, an increase of over 5,800 students compared to the previous school year.
