According to Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Huu Toan, Kien Giang province has a coastline of over 200km, which is favorable for coastal economic development but is also a place susceptible to climate change and coastal erosion. This problem is becoming increasingly complicated and unpredictable, so over the years the province has invested in many important projects, with priority given to investing in coastal sewer systems, production zoning sewers and demolition embankment systems. The province recorded 21 landslides with a length of 122 km, concentrated in 5 districts: An Bien, An Minh, Hon Dat, Kien Luong. The province has invested in 68.81 km of closed embankments, with 52.71 km still needing investment. There are 89 estuaries that flow into the sea that need to be closed. The province has invested in 78 sluice gates, while 11 sluice gates are both under implementation and continue to be proposed for investment.
Mr. Le Huu Toan informed that for the project to prevent coastal erosion and restore dykes and sea embankments from Tieu Dua to Kim Quy area, An Minh district, the total approved embankment length is 3,402m, in Then construction completed 3,152m. The additional embankment section of about 250m is currently completing investment procedures for implementation. Construction is expected to start in August 2024 and be completed in December 2024.
The project to prevent erosion and coastal erosion in the Monday - Xeo Ban section, An Bien - An Minh district has a total approved embankment length of 11,086m and the investment project to handle coastal erosion in Hon Dat district has a total length of 11,086m. The T3 - Hoa Dien lock culvert construction investment project is having problems with site clearance. The Compensation and Clearance Council of Kien Luong district is implementing enforcement procedures for land recovery according to regulations, expected to be completed in August 2024. Start construction and complete the project in December 2025.
The investment project to build 3 culverts of Dam Chich, Phu My, Xeo Nhau is currently appraising the investment preparation procedures and implementing the investment according to the approved Resolution schedule. For this project, Dam Chich culvert borders the Kingdom of Cambodia to the north, so the province asked the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their opinions. Project approval is expected in August 2024, construction will start in early 2025 and completed in 2026.
Mr. Toan also emphasized: "It is necessary to clearly define the viewpoint that the objective of investing in agricultural projects is to serve multiple goals, with priorities: Protecting production and regulating production in the project area; Developing Developing production linked to raw material and processing areas; connecting waterway, land and logistics transportation for investment areas; combining natural disaster prevention and climate change response.
