On September 9, 2024, the Disaster Mitigation Partnership Office held an emergency disaster information sharing meeting, quickly assessed the damage caused by storm No. 3 - Yagi, and developed a plan to mobilize international resources to support overcoming the consequences of this storm.
The meeting was chaired by Chairman of the Disaster Reduction Partnership – Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) Nguyen Hoang Hiep and Co-chair of the Disaster Risk Reduction Partnership – Ms. Pauline Fatima Tamesis, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Vietnam.
At the meeting, Ms. Pauline Fatima Tamesis expressed deep concern for the Vietnamese people facing the serious impacts of storm No. 3 Yagi.
“Right here in Hanoi, we have witnessed the tremendous power of the storm, with strong winds, heavy rains and severe damage. I can only imagine the situation in the coastal provinces, where strong winds have caused enormous damage, and in the northern mountainous areas, where heavy rains, floods and landslides continue to threaten local communities, especially ethnic minority communities,” said Pauline Tamesis.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep made an appeal: “Today, we are here to share information on relief to promptly and effectively support localities affected by natural disasters, helping to avoid duplication of relief work and waste.
Faced with the damage caused by the storm, personally, I think this area needs support to stabilize life, including activities such as: House repair, environmental sanitation, disease prevention, food, nutrition to ensure the provision of urgent needs for affected people, focusing on vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, children, poor families, single people and people with disabilities...".
Responding to Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep's call, Ms. Pauline Tamesis affirmed: "The United Nations stands ready to support the Government of Vietnam and affected communities during this challenging time."
The United Nations is committed to working with partners to provide assistance to localities where the needs are most acute. The focus remains on supporting the most vulnerable, including women, children and people with disabilities, ensuring they receive the necessary protection and assistance.
