On the morning of July 30, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lao Cai province said that the prolonged heavy rain from the afternoon of July 27 to now has caused widespread damage in 20 communes and wards.
Floods damaged houses, flooded hundreds of hectares of crops, caused landslides on many traffic routes and infrastructure works, with a total estimated damage value of more than 8.64 billion VND.
Initial statistics show that 7 households had to be urgently relocated due to landslide risks, 1 house was heavily damaged and 37 households were affected. Local authorities have evacuated 35 households with at least 126 people to safe places. In Mo Vang commune alone, floodwaters swept away 2 fishing boats.
Heavy rain also caused damage to more than 156 hectares of crops and production land, mainly rice, corn, vegetables and perennial crops. About 0.385 hectares of aquaculture were affected.
Notably, in Ban Xeo commune, 7 sturgeon tanks were buried, killing about 6 tons of commercial fish and 8,000 fish fry.
In Bat Xat commune, the estimated damage is about 500 million VND. Three households in Lao Vang village are located in an area at risk of landslides, 6 households have their houses eroded by soil and rocks.
Floods flooded about 8 hectares of rice of more than 70 households, landslides of 200m2 of forestry land, and also caused landslides at about 10 traffic points with nearly 300m3 of soil and rock and damaged some irrigation works.
In Thuong Ha commune, 16 houses were affected, of which 12 households had water overflowing into their houses, 3 households had taluy landslides behind and 1 house was heavily damaged.
Floods also caused damage to nearly 38.5 hectares of rice, peach trees and aquaculture areas; 3 roads were flooded, affecting people's travel.
Meanwhile, in Sa Pa ward, soil and rocks from the positive slope slid down to Sau Chua road, covering the road surface. By the afternoon of July 29, cars and motorbikes could not pass through this area, people had to walk. Functional forces are urgently clearing soil and rocks to soon clear the route.
According to preliminary statistics, rain and floods have caused landslides of more than 40,223m3 of soil and rock, causing damage to many traffic routes, irrigation works, water supply and schools.
Many roads in Coc San, Bao Ha, Muong Khuong, Quy Mong, Trinh Tuong, Xuan Hoa, Muong Lai, Tan Hop and Mo Vang communes are landslides, flooded or cut off, affecting people's travel.
Heavy rain also caused landslides of about 1,933m3 of positive taluy, damaged 22m of negative taluy, 1,400m of longitudinal ditches, 1,550m3 of roadside, 2,010m3 of road surface and many drainage works. Damage to traffic infrastructure alone is estimated at 3.38 billion VND.
Currently, localities are continuing to review and statistically assess damage, warn of the risk of landslides and flash floods in key areas, and at the same time mobilize forces to overcome infrastructure, support people to soon stabilize their lives and restore production.
