People who deliberately stop their vehicles in the right turn lane in Ho Chi Minh City will be severely punished

MINH QUÂN |

HCMC - Traffic police will strengthen inspections and strictly handle cases of intentional stopping and parking within the road reserved for vehicles turning right continuously.

The above information was announced by a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction at a regular press conference on the afternoon of September 18.

According to the Department of Construction, in the past, the unit has implemented solutions to arrange a continuous right turn at many intersections with suitable infrastructure conditions. The goal is to increase the ability to exit vehicles through the intersection, reduce congestion due to the flow of vehicles waiting for traffic lights.

Currently, there are 14 intersections in Ho Chi Minh City that have been organized with continuous right lanes. Of which, 7 intersections are for all types of vehicles (such as Pham Van Dong - Phan Van Tri, Cach Mang Thang 8 - Dien Bien Phu, Le Duan - Ton Duc Thang, Truong Dinh - Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, 3 Thang 2 - Thanh Thai, Phu Nhuan intersection, Cong Hoa - 18E road).

Seven other intersections are arranged specifically for motorbikes (Nguyen Trai - Nguyen Tri Phuong, Pasteur - Ly Tu Trong, Dong Khoi - An Duong Vuong, Nguyen Tri Phuong - Nguyen Van Cu, Tran Hung Dao - Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia - Cong Hoa, 18E Street).

Along with that, the Department has installed 794 signs "Cern to give way to vehicles turning right" and more than 800 sets of traffic lights for two-wheeled vehicles allowed to turn right or go straight when the light is red.

In the fourth quarter of 2025, the installation of additional right turn light systems will continue to be implemented according to people's recommendations.

Through coordination with the City Traffic Safety Committee, the Traffic Police Department and local authorities, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction noted that the traffic situation at intersections has improved significantly.

Organizing a continuous right turn has helped reduce the number of vehicles waiting for lights, making it convenient for drivers to turn right and orient the traffic from a distance.

However, there are still shortcomings when the right turn lane is shared for all types of vehicles, narrowing the road surface for vehicles going straight, leading to a situation where some vehicles stop waiting for lights right on the hammock line, preventing vehicles from turning right.

However, the overall solution is still considered effective, contributing to reducing congestion and enhancing traffic safety.

On that basis, the Department of Construction assigned units to continue reviewing and proposing additional locations where the right turn lane can be arranged continuously. At the same time, the Office of the City Traffic Safety Committee will step up propaganda so that people strictly comply, especially not stopping or parking in the right turn lane.

In the coming time, the Department of Construction will continue to monitor effectively, adjust the scale of the lane to suit the reality, and at the same time study and expand this model throughout the city.

Traffic police will check and handle cases of intentional stopping and parking in the right turn lane continuously, obstructing traffic without a legitimate reason.
