After a series of articles by Lao Dong Newspaper reflecting on the planned dumping of dredged material at the Hon La International Port Project, the government, investors and residents held a meeting to listen to public opinions.
On November 6, the People's Committee of Quang Dong Commune (Quang Trach District, Quang Binh Province) said that after receiving information about the location of dumping dredged materials for the Hon La International General Port Project of Hon La Port Joint Stock Company at Quang Dong Commune beach, the parties held a meeting to record opinions.
The meeting included representatives of the investor, commune authorities, Tho Son village chief and about 60 households in the village.
At the meeting, the people agreed with the plan to build a port. However, they proposed to change the location of the dredged material dumping, disagreeing with the plan to dump the dredged material in the coastal area of Tho Son village (Quang Dong commune).
The reason people do not want to change the current status of the coast is because this is the location for people to exploit seafood near the shore.
Quang Dong commune's viewpoint is to respect people's opinions and propose another location so that people have a place to live and catch shrimp and other types of fish.
As reported by Lao Dong, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Quang Binh province sent a document to the People's Committee of Quang Binh province regarding the approval of the location for dumping dredged materials for the Hon La International General Port Project of Hon La Port Joint Stock Company (in Quang Dong commune).
It is known that the dredging of the channel, turning area and berthing area of the project will generate dredged material. The volume of excess dredged material during construction is about 300,000m³ and the volume of dredging for maintenance of the channel and water area of the project is about 100,000m³.
In phase 1, the proposed dredged material dumping area is about 8.41 hectares on plot 7, map sheet 33, Tho Son village, Quang Dong commune, about 1km west of the construction site of Hon La International General Port.
According to the company's report, the dredged material at the Hon La International General Port project area consists of 4 layers: layer 1: clay mud, layer 2: fine sand, layer 3: clay mud mixed with thin sand layers, layer 4: Ryolite rock.
After learning that the beach here was expected to be a dumping ground for dredged material, the people of Quang Dong commune wanted to keep it to make a living.
