On the morning of February 20, Tuyen Binh Commune People's Committee (Quang Tri province) said that by 6:40 am on the same day, 2 people missing in the boat capsizing on the Gianh River had not been found.
Tuyen Binh Commune People's Committee has also just had initial information about an inland waterway traffic accident that occurred at about 11 am on February 19th on the Gianh River, passing through the commune.
According to the Commune People's Committee, the vehicle involved in the accident was a self-made civilian boat driven by Mr. Nguyen Van Tam (born 1958, residing in Tan Hoa village, Tuyen Binh commune). The boat was borrowed from a man in the area.
There were 7 people on board, including: Mr. Nguyen Van Tam; Ms. C.T. N (born 1958); Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Ha (born 1990); children Nguyen Duy Khanh (born 2014), Nguyen Tan Phat (born 2016), Nguyen Diem Chinh (born 2012) and N.A. N (born 2023). All residing in Tan Hoa village, Tuyen Binh commune.
By the morning of February 20, 3 people were rescued and are being monitored and given medical care, including Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Ha, Nguyen Duy Khanh and Nguyen Tan Phat.

2 people died, Ms. C.T. N and grandchild N.A. N (died after being brought ashore for emergency treatment). 2 people are still missing, including Mr. Nguyen Van Tam and grandchild Nguyen Diem Chinh. Search work is still ongoing.
Regarding the initial cause, according to Tuyen Binh Commune People's Committee, people used people's boats to travel to wish Tet; during the process of traveling on the river, the boat sank. The specific cause is being verified and clarified by functional agencies.
Immediately after the incident occurred, the Commune People's Committee mobilized about 100 people including the Commune Police, the Commune Military Command, grassroots security teams, militia and self-defense forces and people to participate in the search and rescue.
The locality also coordinated with provincial and local defense forces to direct the search and investigate the cause; mobilized 3 boats (bo bo) and 15 aluminum boats to search on the river; equipped with life jackets, life buoys and rescue support vehicles, ensuring safety for participating forces.
In addition, the government organizes visits and encourages families of victims; and at the same time reviews inland waterway vehicles in the area, strengthens propaganda to ensure inland waterway traffic safety to prevent similar incidents.
As Lao Dong Newspaper reported, at about 11:30 am on February 19, Mr. Nguyen Van Tam's family of 7 people traveling by small boat encountered an accident.
People brought 5 people ashore, of which 2 did not survive. Currently, Mr. Tam and a granddaughter are still missing, functional forces are urgently searching.
