On February 19, Tuyen Binh Commune People's Committee (Quang Tri province) said that all victims in the boat capsizing on the Gianh River were members of the same family, residing in Tan Hoa village.
According to local information, there were 7 people on board, including Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen Van Tam (born 1958) and Ms. C.T. N (born 1958) moving together. Currently, Mr. Tam is missing, and Ms. N has died.
Mr. Tam's daughter-in-law, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha (born 1990) and 2 children, Nguyen Duy Khanh (born 2014) and Nguyen Tan Phat (born 2016) were rescued.
In addition, Ms. Ha's other child, Nguyen Diem Chinh (born 2012), is currently missing. Baby N.A. N (born 2023) has died.
Tuyen Binh Commune People's Committee said that the area where the boat capsized on the Gianh River has a deep water level, making search and rescue work difficult.
Notably, the victims were not wearing life jackets when traveling by boat. Local authorities said that they have repeatedly propagated and reminded people to comply with regulations to ensure waterway traffic safety, but there are still subjective cases.
Currently, functional forces continue to organize the search for the remaining missing victims on the Gianh River.
As Lao Dong Newspaper reported, at about 11:30 am on February 19, Mr. Nguyen Van Tam's family of 7 people moved by small boat when they encountered an accident. People rescued 4 people ashore, but 1 baby girl died later, Ms. C.T. N also did not survive. Currently, Mr. Tam and 1 granddaughter are still missing, functional forces are urgently searching.
