On the afternoon of December 20, the 968 Division Martyrs' Remains Search and Collection Team confirmed that after a period of organizing the situation assessment, surveying the area and deploying forces, from December 17 to now, the unit has discovered a total of 4 martyrs' remains in the garden of Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thuy's family (Tan Xuan 1 village, Cam Lo commune, Quang Tri province).
The remains were discovered at a depth of about 0.9m, with the bones broken into many small pieces. The relics include a box containing AK gun bullets, a knife, a belt, a soldier's shirt and many small pieces.
According to initial information from historical witnesses and archival records, in 1968 a battle occurred between a company of the 64th Regiment, Division 320 (Army Corps 3) and US forces in this area. In that fierce battle, 131 officers and soldiers of Regiment 64 heroically sacrificed their lives.
Currently, all the remains of martyrs are being solemnly managed by the Search and Rescue Team at the hall of Tan Xuan 1 village, Cam Lo commune.
Division 968 has directed the force to continue expanding the search area, while coordinating to check, verify, and compare information sources about the area and units that have fought in the area, to serve the work of identifying martyrs in accordance with regulations.
