According to the first prize-winning Thu Thiem 4 bridge design plan, the project is inspired by the image of Southern waves.
The main bridge consists of three continuous arch spans, with a span diagram of 85 m + 180 m + 85 m, ensuring a navigation clearance of 15 m. The main arch uses steel structure, while the main beam is a steel-concrete joint structure.
The highlight of the plan is the space for pedestrians and bicycles. The route starts at a low altitude at both ends of the bridge, then gradually raises and reaches the highest altitude in the central area. This design creates a space to admire the Saigon River and the city horizon.
The above idea originated from the reality that Ba Son bridge (Thu Thiem 2 bridge) after being put into operation has become a tourist attraction attracting many people. However, the narrow sidewalk makes walking and sightseeing not really convenient, and at the same time potentially poses a risk of traffic unsafety.
With Thu Thiem 4 bridge, the pedestrian space is directly connected to the park at the foot of the bridge and the pedestrian bridge item.
Notably, the plan allows mounting pedestrian bridges to bridges for motor vehicles instead of building an independent structure. This solution is expected to significantly save investment costs.
Ho Chi Minh City will assign a consulting unit to continue researching techniques and costs, thereby proposing investment options for pedestrian bridges right in phase 1 or deployed in the later phase.
Thu Thiem 4 bridge commences construction in Q4/2026
The Thu Thiem 4 bridge project has a total length of about 2.16 km, of which the bridge section is more than 1.6 km long. The project is designed with a scale of 8 lanes, including 6 motorized lanes and 2 mixed lanes.
The starting point of the project is on Nguyen Van Linh street, the area intersecting with Tan Thuan 2 bridge, belonging to Tan Thuan ward. The ending point connects to Nguyen Co Thach street, the North-South axis of Thu Thiem New Urban Area, belonging to An Khanh ward.
The project has a total estimated investment of about 5,063 billion VND, using entirely Ho Chi Minh City budget capital and is divided into two component projects.
In which, the compensation, support and resettlement project has a capital of about 1,385 billion VND, recovering about 16.7 hectares of land. There are 136 affected households, of which 73 cases must be completely cleared.
The bridge construction part has a total investment of about 3,678 billion VND.
According to the plan, Thu Thiem 4 bridge will start construction in the fourth quarter of 2026 and be completed and put into operation in the fourth quarter of 2028.
Forming a new connecting axis between the East and the South
When completed, Thu Thiem 4 bridge will form another axis connecting directly between the East and South of Ho Chi Minh City, contributing to shortening the journey between Thu Thiem area and the southern areas of the city.
The project is also expected to reduce traffic pressure for roads and areas that are heavily loaded such as Ton Duc Thang, Nguyen Tat Thanh, Khanh Hoi bridge; Huynh Tan Phat - Luu Trong Lu - Ben Nghe, Huynh Tan Phat - Nguyen Van Linh intersections and Tan Thuan Industrial Park area.
