National Highway 29 is an important route connecting Phu Yen and Dak Lak, and is also connected to strategic traffic axes including seaports, dry ports, airports, railways and international border gates. This is the most favorable route to develop economic corridors and trade goods between the South Central Coast and Central Highlands regions.

The National Highway 29 upgrade project is of great significance in improving traffic connection efficiency and promoting socio-economic development of the two localities.
In the process of investing in upgrading and expanding National Highway 29, the authorities will study and locally adjust some sections of the route to limit site clearance, ensuring compliance with terrain, geological and hydrological conditions corresponding to the selected scale of road granting.

At the meeting, the leaders of the two provinces agreed to propose to the Central Government to consider and approve the investment policy to upgrade and expand National Highway 29 on the section from Km31+300 (intersection of National Highway 1, Dong Hoa town, Phu Yen) to Km178+062 (Buon Ho town, Dak Lak) with a total length of 146.76km.
The investment scale of a level III road, designed speed of 60-80km/h, including 4 lanes, a roadbed of 20.5m wide, is to facilitate travel and transportation of goods.

National Highway 29 has a total length of about 293km, starting at Vung Ro Port (Phu Yen) and ending at Dak Rue Border Gate (Dak Lak).
Currently, most of the road surface of National Highway 29 has degraded, not meeting the increasing transportation needs of people and businesses. In fact, people and voters in Phu Yen province have repeatedly proposed expanding the route due to the narrow road surface and the continuous operation of trucks, which pose a danger to traffic participants.
However, the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction) has not been able to allocate investment capital for the route in the 2021-2025 period due to resource constraints, prioritizing other key projects.
