On the afternoon of May 3, Gianh Bridge on National Highway 1 (connecting Ba Don town and Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province) experienced a congestion of more than 500m in the South - North direction.
At around 3:30 p.m., vehicles from tourist routes such as Phong Nha - Ke Bang poured into the northern gateway of Quang Binh province (near the south of Gianh bridge), causing the road section across the bridge to be overloaded.
Although the traffic police have arranged the number of people to route and regulate, the situation of "bottlenecks" in the Gianh bridge area makes vehicles move very slowly, sometimes causing local congestion.

The old Gianh Bridge is currently a vital traffic point, but the bridge surface is narrow and has deteriorated after many years of exploitation. During holidays, especially during the April 30 - May 1 holiday, the pressure spikes, causing National Highway 1 to often be congested here.
In order to solve the above situation, a new Gianh bridge is being built in parallel. The project starts at Km624+799 (TX. Ba Don) and ends at Km626+901 (Ha My commune, Bo Trach district), with a length of nearly 750m. The new bridge is designed to be modern, including 2 lanes for motor vehicles and 2 lanes for non-motor vehicles, 12m wide. The approach roads at both ends of the bridge are 20.5m wide, meeting high traffic.
It is expected that when completed, the new Gianh bridge will enhance the capacity of travel, reduce the load for the old bridge and make an important contribution to traffic connection, promote socio -economic development in North Quang Binh area. While waiting for the new bridge to complete, the functional forces recommend that people take the initiative in the roadmap to avoid prolonged congestion on Highway 1.
