It has been nearly 3 weeks since storm No. 3 (Yagi) swept through the northern provinces of our country and was immediately followed by a storm circulation that caused heavy rain and severe flooding in many provinces and cities. Besides the loss and pain of life and property, another issue that has received much attention is the environmental pollution caused by waste, decomposed animal carcasses, and seriously polluted water sources that the provinces have to bear.
In flooded areas, the environment is heavily polluted, affecting people's lives and health. The main sources of pollution are feces, garbage, wastewater, solid waste collection and treatment sites, chemical warehouses, pesticide warehouses... being washed into water sources.
Wastewater treatment facilities and drainage systems were destroyed, causing feces, garbage, and wastewater from toilets, sewer systems, and livestock barns to spill directly into the environment. Plants and crops died from being submerged in water for a long time; the corpses of some animals, livestock, and poultry pollute the environment and can be a source of disease transmission.
Ha Long Bay (Quang Ninh) is facing great pressure from the huge amount of waste drifting to the shore. The amount of waste is mainly foam buoys and broken aquaculture cages drifting from the coastal area, causing waste floating on the sea surface, affecting the landscape, environment and activities of welcoming and serving visitors to Ha Long Bay.
In this situation, Lao Dong Newspaper will host a discussion "So that environmental pollution after storms and floods is no longer a concern" with the participation of Mr. Nguyen Van Ve - Vice President of Vietnam Clean Water and Environment Association and Dr. Tran Van Son - Head of Environmental Technology Department, Faculty of Environment, University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
The seminar aims to propose solutions to overcome the consequences of environmental pollution after storms and floods, helping to assess and identify the risks of environmental pollution due to incidents and natural disasters. Develop and organize the implementation of pollution prevention plans, especially water pollution; waste generated after floods including dead animals, plants and crops decomposed due to long-term immersion in water. Propose to people and management agencies measures to collect, manage waste and overcome, ensuring water sources for daily life.
The discussion is scheduled to take place at 9:00 a.m. on September 30, 2024 at the Lao Dong Newspaper studio - No. 6 Pham Van Bach, Yen Hoa, Cau Giay, Hanoi.
We respectfully invite you to follow.
