After many years of people's longing and waiting, along with the efforts of Party committees and authorities to remove obstacles, the investment project for the Son La - Dien Bien - Tay Trang Border Gate expressway section (phase 1) in Dien Bien province will be started on May 20.
Accordingly, this expressway is about 44.3 km long. The starting point of the project is located at the border between Son La and Dien Bien provinces (connected to the CT. 03 expressway passing through Son La province); the ending point is at the IC5 intersection (Km48+300), connecting to Muong Thanh ward, Dien Bien province.

The road is designed according to expressway standards with a speed of 80 km/h, with a scale of 4 complete lanes. The 22 m wide roadbed along with a synchronous system of bridges, tunnels and intersections, promises to clear traffic bottlenecks, creating strong development momentum for the Northwest region.
The total investment of the project is over 23,252 billion VND, of which the central budget supports 21,828 billion VND, and the rest is counterpart capital from the local budget.
The project is implemented in the period 2026 - 2030 and is divided into 2 component projects: Compensation, support, resettlement, site clearance; investment in building the main route.
Assigned by Dien Bien Provincial People's Committee to be the investor of 2 component projects, the Provincial Traffic Works Project Management Board (QLDA) has established a Project Implementation Steering Committee, clearly assigning people and work.
These days, the Board is organizing working sessions with the People's Committees of communes in the project area to remove obstacles before implementing the project.

To realize the policy of "Resettlement must go one step ahead", Dien Bien prioritizes the implementation of component project 1 (with a total investment of 1,424 billion VND) to create a clean ground and build synchronous and spacious resettlement areas for people before putting machinery into the main route construction.
Up to now, the Provincial Traffic Works Project Management Board has agreed on the construction locations of resettlement areas. It is expected that the entire route will build 6 resettlement points with a scale of 3-5ha/point (Muong Lan, Muong Phang and Muong Ang communes, 2 points each).
The total land clearance area of the project is about 776.29 ha. There will be about 276 households affected and needing to be relocated (Muong Lan commune 111 households, Muong Ang 48 households, Muong Phang 96 households, Dien Bien Phu ward 15 households and Muong Thanh ward 6 households).
For component projects investing in the construction of the main route, the investor completes investment preparation procedures and selects consulting contractors to soon deploy basic design.
According to PV's investigation, the groundbreaking ceremony of component project 1 of this expressway project is expected to be held by Dien Bien Provincial People's Committee on May 20 in Mon Ha village, Muong Lan commune. This will be a historical milestone, opening up regional connections for ethnic minorities in the Northwest region.
Son La - Dien Bien - Tay Trang Border Gate expressway has a length of 155 km, of which Dien Bien province has a total length of 75.3 km.
In phase 1, the total length is 48.3 km, with a total investment of 23,252 billion VND; phase 2, connecting from Muong Thanh ward to Tay Trang border gate with a total length of 27 km, with a total investment of 8,717 billion VND.
