Submit to the National Assembly to deploy the second runway of Long Thanh airport
On October 5, the Office of the Government sent a document to the Minister of Transport informing the Prime Minister's opinion on the proposal to the National Assembly to deploy the second runway of the Long Thanh airport project.
Accordingly, regarding the adjustment of the investment policy for the Long Thanh airport project phase 1, the Prime Minister assigned the Ministry of Transport to urgently complete the submission, propose the implementation of the second runway, and submit it to the National Assembly at the 8th Session of the 15th National Assembly. In particular, it is recommended that the National Assembly agree on the policy for the Government to implement.
Previously, Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) reported to the Committee for State Capital Management at Enterprises about adding a second runway to component project 3 - Long Thanh Airport Construction Project Phase 1.
3 reasons for adding a runway worth 3,455 billion VND
According to Mr. Nguyen Tien Viet - Deputy General Director in charge of ACV, the need to build a second runway parallel to the first runway during the investment and construction process of Long Thanh airport phase 1 is very necessary and will bring many benefits in the operation and exploitation of Long Thanh airport for 3 reasons:
Contribute to improving the capacity to ensure flight safety and continuous operational stability.
Taking advantage of available human resources and equipment at the construction site saves time and avoids dust and noise that may affect or even interrupt operations if Long Thanh airport phase 1 is put into operation.
The third reason, according to ACV, practical experience shows that international airports that act as gateways with a designed capacity of about 25 million passengers/year such as Long Thanh airport phase 1 all have 2 parallel runways connected to each other. For example, in the country, there are Noi Bai airport, Da Nang airport, Tan Son Nhat airport... In Asia, such as Kansai/Osaka airport, with an output of 18 million passengers/year including 2 runways, Shanghai airport with an output of 28 million passengers/year including 3 runways...
According to ACV, the project to build a second runway (4,000m long) parallel to the first runway and a complete taxiway system according to the plan has a total investment of VND 3,455 billion and will be completed synchronously with the component project of Long Thanh airport phase 1 (expected in September 2026).
The construction area of the second runway is completely within the investment scope of Long Thanh airport construction phase 1, which is 1,810 hectares and has been cleared. ACV has received the handover to implement the project and this area has completed the construction of drainage leveling phase 1.
According to ACV, the addition of a second runway will not increase the total investment in component project 3 - construction of Long Thanh airport phase 1.
Long Thanh Airport phase 1, when put into operation, will reach 152,220 take-offs and landings/year, corresponding to a design capacity of 25 million passengers/year and 1.2 million tons of cargo/year.
