On October 30, speaking with Lao Dong Newspaper reporter, Mr. Luu Duc Huan - Chairman of Thanh Trach Commune People's Committee (Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province) said that due to the influence of storm No. 6, bad weather, heavy rain, and waves hitting the shore, landslides occurred in the coastal areas of Thanh Xuan and Thanh Hai villages (Thanh Trach Commune).
The sea waves eroded about 10m inland, stretching 2km. The landslide caused the waves to flood the banks of the people's shrimp ponds, continuously destroying the ponds and causing shrimp loss.
A shrimp farmer affected by the landslide said that his family raised 3 shrimp ponds, 2 of which had been stocked 2 months ago, and one pond that had been stocked for only half a month, but the waves hit and the lake bank was severely broken, causing all the shrimp and machinery to be swept out to sea, with estimated damage of more than 2 billion VND.
According to Mr. Luu Duc Huan, coastal erosion also affects protective forests, tomb areas and especially nearby residential areas, about 450/3,300 households of the commune are affected.
"Water is flooding into people's shrimp ponds. If timely measures are not taken to build embankments to protect them, erosion will destroy residential areas," said Mr. Huan.
