After mass poisoning cases, Gia Lai increases inspection of banh mi and street food

Gia Lai - After food poisoning cases with hundreds of people hospitalized, the province requested to "scrutin" banh mi and street food establishments and increase surprise inspections.

For many months, in Gia Lai province, there have been consecutive cases of poisoning, suspected food poisoning with a large number of people affected, especially related to processed foods, bread and street food.

Typically, from August 23 to 24, An Khe Medical Center recorded many people with symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, fever after eating mixed bread of Bin Bin Business Household. A total of 254 people came for examination and treatment; by 1 pm on September 3, all had stabilized, been discharged from the hospital, and there were no deaths.

Test results revealed Salmonella spp. bacteria in the specimen and some raw materials at this facility including pate, dried chicken, fried fish cake.

Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee has fined Bin Bin business household 100 million VND, forced to recall and destroy unsafe food and pay expenses related to handling the case, examination, and treatment of food poisoning patients.

Previously, from May 23 to 24, medical facilities in the eastern province recorded 124 people hospitalized with symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting and fever after eating bread of Lam Huyen Business Household.

Test results of 30 specimens showed 7 samples positive for Salmonella spp. - an agent that often causes gastrointestinal food poisoning.

The above two cases are typical cases with a large number of cases. According to Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee, the number of banh mi and street food businesses in the area is very large, while the inspection and supervision rate is still low.

The fact that statistics and commitments have been signed but regular post-inspection and post-inspection have not been carried out shows that management in some areas has not kept up with the actual level of risk.

To rectify this situation, Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee Pham Anh Tuan requested the Department of Health to coordinate with units and localities to review and classify establishments according to the level of risk; prioritize unscheduled inspections of banh mi, street food, processed food establishments and places that have violated.

Do not allow the situation of "having a list but not being actually managed"; do not take the signing of commitments as a basis to replace inspection and supervision.

The province also requests to strengthen focused sampling for high-risk raw materials and foods such as pate, meat and meat products, spring rolls, eggs, raw vegetables, sauces and processed foods.

Functional agencies must strictly handle violations, without leniency, avoidance, or omission. For establishments that seriously violate, re-offend, or are at risk of affecting consumer health, apply strict handling levels, suspend operations, recall, and destroy products.

In case there are signs of crime, it must be immediately transferred to the investigating agency, not to have administrative handling replace criminal responsibility.
