Worry about house sinking and cracking before storm season
As a resident whose house was affected by the construction of Cai Khe Boat Dock in Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City, Mr. The Huu (63 years old) - said that his family and many surrounding households are waiting every day to receive compensation for damages from the insurance company, the construction contractor and the project investor.
Mr. Huu is worried because his house is currently tilted and sunk a lot, but for many months he still hasn't had enough money to repair it, especially in the upcoming storm situation.
“My family was on the list of people to be compensated for damages, and we agreed to pay more than 35 million VND. Although this amount is only enough for partial repairs, we accepted it and tried to repair the damage as it occurred. However, until today (September 19), I still have not received the compensation,” said Mr. Huu.
Similarly, Mr. Tran Van Phu Lam (45 years old) whose 4 houses have sunk and cracked due to the construction of Cai Khe Boat Dock also expressed his wish to receive compensation soon, and at the same time, relevant units need to be responsible for the damage to people's houses.
“I hope that relevant units will soon overcome the consequences and compensate appropriately and properly for the affected people during the construction process. In particular, units must be responsible for visiting and encouraging people to repair their houses and overcome the consequences,” Mr. Lam expressed.
Complete processing before October 31
Regarding the above issue, speaking with Lao Dong on September 19, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Huong - the construction unit of Cai Khe Boat Dock project - informed that while waiting to work with the insurance unit, the construction unit will advance an amount of about 2.5 billion VND to pay compensation; including the cost of supporting affected households in their business and the cost of renting temporary housing for households affected during the construction process.
“The contractor has sent the records of the affected households to the ward People’s Committee and is waiting for the local authorities to sign confirmation, then will proceed to pay compensation in installments. This list has the correct owners and residents, these are the necessary records for the contractor to work with the insurance company later,” said Mr. Huong.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Tho - Deputy Director of the ODA Project Management Board of Can Tho City, the Cai Khe Boat Dock project has a total of 141 affected households, so far, the unit has compensated about 60 households. Currently, there are still some households that have not agreed on the compensation value, so the unit is continuing to discuss and negotiate.
“We are compiling the records of the households to sign and transfer to the insurance unit to pay the third installment. It is expected that this week the records will be completed and compensation will be made to the households. After that, the unit will continue to complete the records to pay the fourth and fifth installments, trying to complete the process before October 31,” Mr. Tho added.
The Cai Khe Boat Lock project is worth about 437 billion VND, a package under the Can Tho City Development Project and enhancing urban resilience, invested by the Can Tho City ODA Project Management Board, and started construction in September 2022.
The project has been completed, especially with the performance of artistic lighting system and water music. However, the project is still facing difficulties in compensation for households whose houses have sunk and cracked during the construction process.
