Special Tet in life
It has been three months since a series of devastating landslides took away the homes of hundreds of households and killed dozens of people, but the atmosphere in resettlement areas in Bao Yen district has now begun to return to cheerful laughter.
In particular, it is impossible not to mention the cooperation of the government and the community. Thanks to that, the new resettlement houses are gradually being completed, bringing happiness and warmth to the people when the cold and Lunar New Year are approaching.
In the last days of the year, Lao Dong Newspaper reporters visited Lang Nu village, Phuc Khanh commune to learn about the lives of local people after the storm and flood.
What was noticeable was that the gloomy atmosphere was gone, replaced by conversations and plans to make a better life in the resettlement area.
Welcoming us at the temporary house next to the reconstruction site, Mr. Hoang Van Vo (who lost his wife, children and home after storm No. 3) confided: “Since the flash flood swept away my house, wife and children, I have not had the mind to focus on work. But no matter how deep the wound is, it will eventually heal. Everyone around us encouraged each other to think more openly, try to stabilize their mentality to start over.”
Looking at the newly completed houses, Mr. Hoang Van Vo could not hide his hope for a more stable future. According to this man, this will be the first year that households will be able to celebrate Tet in new stilt houses, the most special Tet of their lives.
“People here are extremely joyful and happy. Thanks to the support of the State and benefactors, this Tet we will have a new house to live in and welcome everyone. When I move soon, I will buy more furniture to prepare for the new year,” Mr. Hoang Van Vo happily said.
Luckily rescued in time during the flash flood, and discharged from the hospital, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan (Lang Nu village) shared: After the natural disaster, he himself is starting to rebuild. Although the process of recovery will be very difficult, he still has to try to be a support for the remaining relatives.
"This Tet, we will organize the traditional Chung cake wrapping according to the Tay people's custom. Together we will prepare a feast to welcome the new year, praying for a year of favorable weather and wind," said Mr. Tuan.
Speaking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Ms. Vu Thi Tu - Secretary of Phuc Khanh Commune (Bao Yen District) said: "Thanks to the sponsors and the construction unit speeding up the progress. This is the first year that the people of Lang Nu celebrate Tet in their new house with many mixed emotions."
According to Ms. Vu Thi Tu, the houses are not only a place to live but also a place where people can start everything from scratch. Authorities at all levels will have plans to support people in economic development, from restoring fields, surveying and implementing projects to raise sturgeon, raise chickens, grow oranges, etc.
New houses in Nam Tong, Kho Vang
Moving from Nu Village to Nam Tong Village, Nam Luc Commune (Bac Ha District), where 18 people died in a landslide in early September. Three months have passed, and 15 households in the village still have to live in makeshift tents built from tarpaulin because all their houses and belongings have been buried under layers of rocks and soil.
Outside, the cold winter wind whistled through the gaps in the tarpaulin, along with the drizzle, making life even more difficult for the residents.
When he heard the news that he was about to move to a new house, Mr. Sung Seo Giao could not hide his emotion and happiness: “For the past few months, our households have had to live and work temporarily on the roadside. Solid and safe houses are no longer far away. Hopefully, when we have a house, we will have a warm Tet and soon stabilize our lives.”
Sitting by the fire to dispel the winter cold, Mr. Ly Lau said that the resettlement house was completed before Tet, which was a very lucky thing for the households in the village. Being able to welcome the new year in this house helped to lessen the pain and loss.
“When moving to the new house, my family will buy more furniture to serve our daily life. Hopefully this will be a smooth and happy start,” Mr. Ly Lau said excitedly.
About 5km from Nam Tong resettlement area, 35 houses of people in Kho Vang village (Coc Lau commune) are also gradually being completed.
Ms. Ly Thi Toong - who lost her house and family in the flood - is no longer as sad as before. Her face is radiant and her eyes sparkle with joy.
Ms. Toong shared that thanks to the support of people across the country, the help from local authorities and businesses, she has now rebuilt a new house in a new location. As for the house allocated in the reconstruction area, she gave it to her mother-in-law to live in.
