After about 3 years of starting construction, construction packages under the Nam Rom River basin disaster management project are gradually taking shape.
The project is built with the goal of increasing flood and landslide resistance, while creating a new face for the central area of Dien Bien province.
The project was started in July 2023, with a total investment of over 981 billion VND.
According to the Project Management Board of Agricultural and Rural Development Works of Dien Bien province (the investor), the total land area to be recovered to implement the entire project is about 89.5ha, involving 527 households, organizations and individuals.
As of September 4, 2026, the total value of construction packages completed reached approximately 535 billion VND, equivalent to 70.58%.
Up to now, the work of inventorying, land recovery and compensation, site clearance has basically been completed, creating conditions for contractors to focus on constructing items according to plan.
Real-world records in the central area of Dien Bien province show that most of the riverbanks have been built with embankments.
Many sections after completion of the embankment continue to be invested in drainage ditches, railings and lighting poles.
Not only contributing to protecting the riverbank, new items are gradually creating living space, walking and exercising for people.
Ms. Tong Thi Trang (Dien Bien Phu ward) said that the appearance of both banks of the river is clearly changing.
Both banks of the river are becoming more and more beautiful every day now. After the embankment is completed, the bank has a pedestrian path along the river, so in the afternoon my grandchild and I often come here to stroll and exercise. The riverside space is very cool" - Ms. Trang shared.
When completed, the Nam Rom River multi-disaster management project will not only contribute to improving the disaster prevention and control capacity for the river basin but is also expected to create a new urban space along both banks of the river, directly serving people's lives.
The Nam Rom River - which is associated with the history, life and production of the people of Dien Bien - is gradually taking on a new face through the above project.
The project to manage multiple natural disasters in the Nam Rom river basin in Dien Bien province, approved for investment policy by the Prime Minister in Decision 170/QD-TTg, dated February 4, 2021.
The total capital for the project is over 981 billion VND, of which ODA loans from the French Development Agency AFD are 665.5 billion VND (24.65 million Euros); counterpart funds are 275.028 billion VND (10.19 million Euros) and non-refundable EU aid is 40.5 billion VND (1.5 million Euros).
