Ho Chi Minh City raises the entire road by more than 1m to prevent flooding

Ho Chi Minh City raises Dang Thuy Tram street (Binh Loi Trung ward) to 1m to 1.1m to eliminate prolonged flooding points for many years.

Recorded on June 23, at the Dang Thuy Tram road construction site, many workers and machinery are urgently constructing items.

The section near Pham Van Dong street has completed the installation of drainage culverts and water inlets.

Currently, the altitude of the sewer mouths is about 1 m higher than the road surface, corresponding to the new road surface altitude after the project is completed.

At the end of the route, construction units are deploying the installation of drainage culverts, sidewalk curbs and many other auxiliary items.

However, the construction process also causes no small difficulties for people's travel.

Many road sections have appeared with bumpy road surfaces, construction materials gathered along the route, and excavators operating in the middle of the road, causing vehicles to travel slowly. Some barriers are still rudimentary, posing a potential risk of traffic unsafety.

Living for many years on this road, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hanh (60 years old) said that people are very much looking forward to the project completion because this is an area that is often deeply flooded every time high tide combines with heavy rain.

I have been flooded for many years, so everyone is happy when the city raises the road. But the long construction time makes travel very inconvenient. Just a little rain and water stagnates, and when it's sunny, dust flies everywhere. I hope the project will be completed soon so that people can stabilize their lives" - Ms. Hanh shared.

The project to renovate and upgrade Dang Thuy Tram road has a total capital of more than 93 billion VND, invested by the Binh Thanh Regional Construction Investment Project Management Board.

The project has a length of about 1.2 km, a cross-section width of 30 m. In addition to raising the roadbed from 1 m to 1.1 m to synchronize with the regional traffic system, the project also builds new drainage systems, asphalt concrete pavement, sidewalks, green trees and lighting systems.

Representatives of the investor said that the project started construction on January 16, 2026, and the actual volume has reached more than 60%.

Currently, units are prioritizing completing the drainage system along both sides of the route. After completion, sidewalks, green trees and road surface restoration will be implemented.

Regarding the reflection on the situation of localized flooding arising during construction, the investor said that the reason is that the drainage system is in the unfinished construction phase, so it has not been effective.

In addition, during the project implementation, there was a situation where construction materials and construction equipment were gathered outside the permitted scope. Before this incident, the People's Committee of Binh Loi Trung ward coordinated with the Hang Xanh Traffic Police Team under the Traffic Police Department of Ho Chi Minh City Police to inspect and make records of violations.

The investor has also requested the contractor to rectify the construction organization, strengthen traffic safety, environmental sanitation and create favorable conditions for people to travel.

According to the plan, the project will be completed and put into use in October 2026. At that time, Dang Thuy Tram road will not only contribute to solving flooding caused by high tides but also strengthen traffic connections with important roads such as Pham Van Dong, Nguyen Xi and No Trang Long.
