Recognizing the special importance of water to life and social security, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has agreed on the planning orientation of raw water reservoirs in the project to adjust the Ho Chi Minh City Master Plan to 2040, with a vision to 2060. This content was announced at the workshop "Providing clean water for Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnamese cities: Challenges and solutions" held on the afternoon of December 26.
According to the plan, by 2040, Ho Chi Minh City will consider arranging water reservoirs in Cu Chi district with an area of about 200 hectares and a capacity of 10 million m3. At the same time, a cluster of water reservoirs will also be arranged in Tay Ninh province.
After 2040, Ho Chi Minh City will add a water reserve lake in Binh Chanh district with an area of about 100 hectares and a capacity of 5 million m3. In addition, a water pipeline system from Dau Tieng Lake (Tay Ninh) will also be built.
General Director of Saigon Water Corporation (Sawaco), Tran Quang Minh, said that the company is currently providing 2.4 million m3 of clean water per day for more than 11 million people and 3 million tourists and visitors in Ho Chi Minh City. He also acknowledged the increasing challenges facing the water supply industry due to population growth and urbanization. Climate change is also a factor causing difficulties, which can lead to the risk of input water shortages and water quality degradation due to pollution.
According to Mr. Minh, although it is impossible to solve all problems in a short time, the workshop is an opportunity to highlight issues, conduct research together, develop cooperation plans and propose solutions to overcome challenges at both national and international levels.
