The Phan Thuc Duyen - Tran Quoc Hoan underground tunnel is part of the project to build a 4km long road connecting Tran Quoc Hoan - Cong Hoa, which was started by Ho Chi Minh City at the end of 2022 with a total cost of more than 4,800 billion VND.
It was noted that on July 13, the 2-lane temporary bridge at the location above the closed tunnel on Phan Thuc Duyen Street was dismantled.
The construction contractor deployed cranes to transport materials to reinforce the tunnel cover. On both sides of the tunnel, excavators are leveling soil on both sides of the wall to prepare for the roadbed above.
It is expected that the remaining 3-lane temporary bridge will continue to be dismantled before July 18 to restore the road surface to traffic.
Previously, the contractor built two temporary bridges with 5 lanes wide for vehicles to pass in order to have a convenient ground for constructing the closed tunnel.
After 1.5 years of construction, the underground tunnel at the intersection of Phan Thuc Duyen - Tran Quoc Hoan streets reached 90% volume.
The total length of the tunnel is about 400m, of which the closed section is 40m long, the road leading into the tunnel on Hoang Van Thu Park side is about 180m long, the road leading out of the tunnel on the Flight Management Center side is more than 180m long.
Currently, contractors are focusing on manpower to construct the underground tunnel to complete traffic opening at the end of August for two lanes of traffic running in the direction from Phan Thuc Duyen street to Thang Long street.
Previously, about 500m at the beginning of the road connecting Tran Quoc Hoan - Cong Hoa (adjacent to the bow of Truong Chinh - Cong Hoa ship) was open to traffic.
According to the Management Board of Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Construction Investment Projects (investor), the entire project connecting Tran Quoc Hoan - Cong Hoa has reached more than 50% of the volume, expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
This new route will directly connect to terminal T3 of Tan Son Nhat airport (under construction), opening up more access to the airport and breaking the monopoly at the entrance gate on Truong Son street.
In addition, this route helps create a new traffic axis parallel to the Cong Hoa route, reducing traffic pressure at the airport gateway.
