Professor, PhD, Labor Hero, People's Teacher Vo Tong Xuan (1940 - 2024) was born in Ba Chuc (Tri Ton - An Giang). He has experienced many important domestic and international positions. Typically: Vice Principal of Can Tho University, Principal of An Giang University, Southern Can Tho University, Member of the Board of Directors of the World Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC).
He was awarded many noble awards by many organizations around the world such as the 2005 Derek Tribe Award for Science and Technology; 2002 Nikkei Asia Award for Regional Growth; 1993 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Service to the State; Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister of Canada (1995) for Service and contribution to world science; Agricultural Horseman Medal from the French Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (1996); University of the Philippines Los Banos Most Outstanding Alumni Award (2001), Derek Tribe-Australia Award (2005).
In October 2008, the representative of SEARCA (Southeast Asia Regional Center for Agricultural Training and Research, located in the Philippines) officially announced that Prof. Dr. Vo Tong Xuan was the first agricultural scientist in the world. The world was awarded the first award by the "Dioscoro L. Umali Award" Council on the 42nd anniversary of SEARCA's founding.
This is an award for outstanding individuals with exemplary achievements in contributing to the development and progress in the field of agriculture and rural development in Southeast Asia.
In 2017, on the occasion of the 50th traditional holiday, the Alumni Association (October 10, 1967 - October 10, 2017) of the Philippine University of Agriculture awarded Prof. Dr. Vo Tong Xuan 2 major awards for alumni. The best include: "Golden Award for the most outstanding alumni" (2017 Golden Jubilarian Award) and "Outstanding Alumni in Rice Technology" (2017 Outstangding Uplb Alumni Award for Rice Technology).
Most recently, in December 2023, Professor Vo Tong Xuan became the first Vietnamese scientist to be honored at the VinFuture Award for his work "Inventing and disseminating disease-resistant rice varieties". Sharing with Labor reporters, he said: "I spent the entire 2023 VinFuture bonus of nearly 6 billion VND to establish a scholarship fund to care for farmers' children."
Accordingly, 2/3 of the support will go to the Vo Tong Xuan Scholarship Fund jointly founded by his former students on the 55th anniversary of the founding of Can Tho Agricultural School (1968-2023) with the purpose of supporting students.
