On May 10, leaders of Dien Chau Commune People's Committee said that the Commune Police are verifying the watermelon fields of people in the area suspected of being destroyed by bad guys.
According to the report of Mr. Cao Duc Ton (48 years old, residing in former Dien Thanh commune, now belonging to Dien Chau commune), at about 6 am on the same day, when going to the field to pump water, he discovered many watermelons lying scattered on the field.
Many watermelons were chopped many times, some were pierced by sharp objects, trampled and damaged. Nearly 6 watermelon beds were heavily damaged, each bed had 5-10 watermelons chopped. Many fruits have reached a weight of about 4 kg, preparing for harvest.
According to Mr. Ton, the area of watermelon fields destroyed is about more than 3.5 sao. This year's watermelon crop, his family planted a total of 6 sao, invested a lot of money in seeds, fertilizers and care labor for many months with the hope of having more income.
There are only about 7 days left until harvest. All capital and effort are put into this melon field, but now it is almost completely destroyed," Mr. Ton said sadly.
Mr. Ton added that the current price of watermelons is about 6,000 - 7,000 VND/kg. The amount of watermelons destroyed by bad guys caused great damage to the family.
Mr. Ton's family is near-poor, and for many years has mainly lived by growing watermelons. He and his wife also raise a 10-year-old child with congenital disabilities, blind in both eyes, so life is very difficult.
According to Mr. Ton, there were previous threats related to personal matters. However, he is currently only suspicious and hopes that functional agencies will soon clarify the case.
After receiving the report, Dien Chau Commune Police went to the scene to record and verify the cause of the watermelon field being cut down.
