Hybrid is not just for fuel saving
Land Cruiser Hybrid uses a parallel hybrid system, combined with a V6 3.5L Twin-Turbo gasoline engine with an electric motor. Total power reaches 457 horsepower, maximum torque 790 Nm. Power is transmitted to all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The above parameters show that Toyota does not develop hybrid systems in the direction of trading performance for savings. Electric motors also play a role in supplementing traction, helping the powertrain react faster in some operating conditions.
This is especially noteworthy for the Land Cruiser, an SUV line that is associated with the ability to operate on many terrains. The electric motor can provide near-immediate torque, thereby supporting the car when moving at low speeds, climbing slopes or overcoming difficult roads.
According to information from the Vietnam Register, Land Cruiser Hybrid has a mixed fuel consumption of about 10 liters/100 km. This is a notable advantage for SUVs with large sizes and power.
From popular cars to high-end SUVs
Toyota is one of the automakers that has pursued hybrid technology for a long time. In Vietnam, this technology previously mainly appeared on car models serving daily travel needs, in which fuel economy was an important factor.
The expansion of hybrids to high-end car lines shows that the scope of application of this technology is changing. With large SUVs, the problem is not only to reduce fuel consumption but also to maintain power, smoothness and performance.
Land Cruiser Hybrid is a clear example of this approach. The appearance and basic usage space are still maintained, while the transmission system is supplemented with an electric motor to support operating performance.
The above trend also shows that hybrids can still play a significant role in the transformation of the automotive industry. Compared to pure electric vehicles, this technology does not require users to completely change their usage habits or depend on the charging system. More difficult problem with large SUVs
Bringing hybrids to an SUV model like Land Cruiser sets higher requirements than urban cars. The electrification system must operate stably on a heavy, high-capacity car and be able to operate in many off-road conditions.
Toyota must therefore balance fuel efficiency, power and performance. The fact that the Land Cruiser Hybrid still maintains 4-wheel drive and a 10-speed automatic transmission shows that this is still a versatile SUV model, instead of just focusing on economics.
More importantly, the appearance of hybrids on the Land Cruiser reflects a change in the way this technology is applied. From a solution mainly serving the goal of fuel economy on popular cars, hybrids are gradually becoming part of the powertrain on models that require high power and performance.
