When the screen becomes part of the safety system
On modern car models, the instrument cluster is no longer simply a place to display speed. Many information related to operating status and safety warnings are transmitted to the driver through the electronic screen.
Therefore, an error that causes the screen to be interrupted or does not display enough information can affect the driver's ability to recognize the vehicle's condition.
The recall file of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that this is not a theoretical issue. A recall campaign involving more than 20,000 electric vehicles in the US was carried out due to software errors that could cause the instrument cluster screen to not work. According to the NHTSA, when the screen does not display important information such as the number position or warning light, the risk of collision may increase.
Another NHTSA file also recorded that the instrument cluster may temporarily lose display due to an error related to the communication process between electronic systems. When an error occurs, some necessary instruments and indicator lights may lose display for a short time.
These cases show that screens in modern cars are playing a larger role than before. A part that was once considered a display device has now become a link in the information system serving the driver.
Small mistake but no longer simple
The development of technology makes cars increasingly dependent on software and electronic controllers. Instrument clusters, central screens, cameras, sensors and many driving assist systems all need to operate synchronously to provide information to users.
This also changes the perception of errors in cars. A problem that does not make the car unable to move can still become a safety-related error if it prevents the driver from receiving the necessary information.
The NHTSA has recorded cases of faulty instrument clusters that prevent the screen from displaying information such as speedometers or warning lights. For errors that affect the functions specified in safety standards, manufacturers may have to recall and take remedial measures.
However, not every screen error means a risk of unsafety. The level of impact depends on the faulty function and the type of information that the system is responsible for providing.
The noteworthy point is that users are increasingly dependent on electronic information when operating the car. Warnings about the braking system, tire pressure, airbag status, gear position or technical errors can all be transmitted to the driver through the instrument cluster and screen.
When one of these information channels malfunctions, the driver may not receive a warning at the right time.
This change also poses higher requirements for the process of checking and maintaining cars. Bugs related to software or electronic systems do not always manifest as common mechanical errors. A car can still start and move, but errors also exist in the display system or controller.
For users, phenomena such as screen blinking, information loss, abnormal warnings or unstable clock cluster operation should not be underestimated. When the car is subject to recall, the manufacturer's full implementation of remedial measures is necessary.
The more digitalized the car, the greater the role of electronic systems in operational safety. Cases of recalls due to instrument cluster errors show that the safety problem in modern cars is not only in the engine, brakes or suspension, but can also start from where the driver looks to know how the car is working.
