Record number of recalled vehicles in Korea in 2024

In 2024, the number of vehicles voluntarily recalled by Korean automakers reached a record high of 5.12 million vehicles.

Accordingly, the Korea Road Traffic Administration said that in 2024, the number of vehicles voluntarily recalled by the country's automakers reached a record high, up to 5.12 million vehicles, of which nearly 80% were from Hyundai Motor.

It is known that these cars belong to 1,684 different models, recalled mainly due to manufacturing defects. Of which, the number of cars from Hyundai Motor and Kia Corp. under Hyundai Motor Group accounts for the majority (4.07 million cars), equivalent to 79.2% of the total number of cars.

It can be seen that this figure is higher than the 1.69 million recalled vehicles in 2023 and breaking the previous record of 3.25 million vehicles set in 2022.

A representative of Hyundai Motor Group said that some of the recalled cars are related to popular models, so the total number of cars in this category has increased naturally.

In addition to conventional cars, the number of recalled electric vehicles in Korea also increased significantly in 2024 with more than 1.2 million vehicles, up from 707,088 vehicles in 2021 and 187,560 vehicles in 2020.

Previously, in March 2024, Hyundai and Kia announced a voluntary recall of nearly 170,000 electric vehicles to fix software errors, marking one of the largest recalls of electric vehicle models ever.
