In 2024, US automakers will recall tens of millions of vehicles to address safety issues. After three consecutive years, this year, Ford is no longer the "king of recalls" for defective vehicles because Stellantis Group has taken the lead with 67 recalls. If counting the number of defective vehicles recalled for repair, Tesla leads the entire US market with nearly 5.14 million vehicles, while Stellantis ranks second with more than 4.72 million vehicles.
According to the data, Tesla has the fewest recalls among the top 10 automakers, but has the most defective vehicles in the entire US market. As for Ford, the number of recalls this year is higher than last year, but the number of defective vehicles is lower.
The fourth place in the ranking may surprise many people when Honda and its subsidiary Acura have 18 recall campaigns related to 3.8 million vehicles, making these two brands far ahead of the fifth place of GM with 33 recalls affecting 1.9 million vehicles.
According to information from NHTSA, a reversal of positions occurred in the last days of 2024, when Kia moved from 8th to 7th, surpassing Toyota when it had to recall 22,883 EV9 electric vehicles due to missing bolts in the 2nd and 3rd row seats.
In total, the entire US auto industry had to recall 8.65 million vehicles last year. Of these, Tesla continued to take the number one spot with the largest single recall (2.19 million vehicles at the beginning of the year) due to incorrect front warning light sizes.
Ford came in second with a recall affecting nearly 1.9 million vehicles, due to a possible fall-off of the outer A-pillar panel on the 2011-2019 Explorer. Tesla came in third with another recall affecting nearly 1.85 million vehicles, due to software that may not detect a hood that has been unlatched.
