Need to extend exemption of electric vehicle registration fees
Currently, electric vehicles are exempt from registration fees according to the State's support policy, but this incentive will end on March 1, 2025.
Sharing about this issue, economic expert Pham Chi Lan - former Vice President of VCCI - said that extending the policy is necessary. "In my opinion, the State can completely extend the policy of exempting registration fees for electric cars. Vietnam is facing a serious pollution situation, so measures to encourage green transformation are very necessary" - Ms. Lan emphasized.
She also said that the above policy is not only beneficial to consumers but also contributes to protecting the general environment. "People will welcome it, because switching to electric vehicles not only helps them save costs but also benefits society. The more people use electric vehicles, the more pollution it is, said Ms. Lan.
Ms. Pham Chi Lan commented that the green transformation trend does not only come from consumers but is also a mandatory need for businesses. Exporting enterprises, especially those with foreign partners, all understand that if they do not switch to green, they will lose orders. The service sector is also accelerating this process, she said.
From a policy perspective, Ms. Lan hopes that the Government will have stronger support measures for pioneering enterprises in electric vehicle production, while promoting the use of green vehicles in the public sector.
Hanoi can decide to convert all buses to electric vehicles faster, instead of waiting until 2035. Our public bus system has not yet met the demand, so why not speed up the progress right now, especially for vehicles that are too old, causing serious pollution?" - she proposed.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Chu Hoi - Member of the 15th National Assembly - emphasized that converting to green vehicles is one of the practical measures to reduce air pollution. I have attended many international conferences and found that in Beijing, after only 2 years, they have successfully implemented the transition to electric vehicles. When I returned after 3 years, charging stations appeared everywhere, creating maximum convenience for people" - Mr. Hoi shared. According to him, Vietnam needs to have more practical solutions to promote this process, in which extending the exemption of electric vehicle registration fees is an important step.
Create more motivation, towards the Net Zero goal
After Tet, the electric vehicle market in Vietnam is bustling with a sharp increase in customers. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Do, a car sales employee at a showroom on Pham Van Dong Street (Hanoi), said: "On average, there are about 5-7 customers coming to see the cars directly every day, mainly electric cars. Many people decided to buy right before January 1 to enjoy the registration fee-free incentives.
Normally, after Tet, the auto market is quite quiet, but this year, demand has increased dramatically. "Customers are mainly interested in electric car models such as VF3, VF5... because they are worried that from March onwards, they will have to pay registration fees, causing the total cost of car purchase to increase significantly" - Mr. Do added.
Mr. Phung Duc Dung (Luong Tai district, Bac Ninh) is one of the customers who decided to buy a car earlier than expected. "At the end of 2024, I considered buying an electric car but I did not have enough finances. Now, even though I have not collected enough money, I still want to book a car in advance to enjoy the preferential treatment of no registration fee" - Mr. Dung shared.
From a market perspective, if this incentive is not extended, the electric vehicle market may be affected after March 1, 2025.
"If you have to pay an additional tens of millions of VND in registration fees, customers can reconsider buying a car. This can affect the development of the electric vehicle market as well as the Net Zero goal in the coming time" - Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Do commented.
To promote the green transformation process, extending the registration fee-free policy not only helps people save costs but also creates momentum for the development of electric vehicle infrastructure, contributing to reducing environmental pollution.
