On June 23, Vinh Long General Hospital said that doctors of the General Surgery Department had just successfully performed endoscopic surgery for a patient with intestinal obstruction due to a rectal tumor with a foreign object piercing the colon, a rare case with many dangerous complications.
The patient is Mr. Phan Van P. (65 years old, residing in Dong Thap province). Before being admitted to the hospital, he experienced diarrhea many times, then bloody stools, so his family took him to Vinh Long General Hospital for emergency treatment.
Through examination and performing paraclinical tests, doctors diagnosed the patient with gastrointestinal bleeding, rectal neoplasm of unknown nature, colitis, accompanied by underlying diseases of hypertension and epilepsy.
Notably, the endoscopy results revealed a foreign object about 3cm long, one end deeply penetrating the colon wall, surrounded by pus causing damage to the intestinal wall. At the same time, the rectal tumor caused intestinal narrowing leading to intestinal obstruction.
After consultation, the team of the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation and the General Surgery Department decided to perform laparoscopic surgery to stitch the colon perforation, remove the rectal foreign object and open the sigmoid colon to the skin to treat the lesions, resolve the intestinal obstruction and ensure safety for the patient.
BS CKII Nguyen Van Thanh - Deputy Head of General Surgery Department - said that this is a complex case because the patient has both a rectal tumor causing intestinal obstruction and a foreign object piercing the colon wall causing inflammation and creating pus. If not detected and intervened in time, the patient is at risk of facing peritonitis, septicemia and many other serious complications.
After surgery, the patient is awake, vital signs are stable and is being monitored and treated at the General Surgery Department. After about 3 weeks, when health is stable, the patient will undergo surgery to treat the rectal tumor as planned.
