Vinh Long expands eye care projects, prioritizing students and the elderly

    Vinh Long - The province coordinates with The Fred Hollows Foundation to expand eye care projects, prioritizing students, the elderly and vulnerable groups.

    On August 28, Ms. Nguyen Thi Be Muoi - Provincial Party Committee Member, Vice Chairwoman of Vinh Long Provincial People's Committee worked with The Fred Hollows Foundation (FHF) in Vietnam on eye care projects.

    Currently, FHF sponsors 4 key projects in Vinh Long, focusing on improving the quality of refractive service, grassroots eye care, integrated care for the elderly and school eye care.

    The Department of Health is in charge of 3 projects. The project to improve the quality of refractive service in the 2023-2028 period has a total capital of 3.59 billion VND; the grassroots eye care project has a budget of more than 6.8 billion VND.

    The grassroots eye care project will be implemented until June 2029 at 5 regional general hospitals and 28 communes. The integrated elderly care model will be implemented in Trung Hiep commune until the end of 2027.

    The Department of Education and Training is in charge of the project to integrate eye care into the school health program for the period 2025-2030, implemented at educational institutions in 35 communes and wards, with a total budget of more than 6.1 billion VND.

    The school eye care program alone has communicated to nearly 164,000 students; trained 684 teachers and school health staff in 342 schools, contributing to raising awareness about eye care.

    At the working session, delegates exchanged views on the difficulties caused by the arrangement of administrative units, the reorganization of medical career units and the change of coordination focal points. The human resources of specialized eye doctors at the grassroots level are still thin.

    The progress and coverage of some activities are not uniform, affecting the deployment and disbursement. Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thi Be Muoi requested the sector to coordinate and create favorable conditions for FHF.

    Ms. Nguyen Thi Be Muoi hopes that FHF will continue to support Vinh Long in expanding its area, beneficiaries, prioritizing the elderly, students, the poor, people with disabilities and remote and isolated areas.
