Patient V.M.K (25 years old, residing in Ho Chi Minh City) came to the clinic in a state of swelling, redness, pus, and pain in the penis. Mr. K said that a week ago, he had a piercing at a "store".
Initially, he only felt a little uncomfortable, but after a few days, he had symptoms of fever and discomfort when urinating, so he sought medical attention. After examination, the doctor found that the patient's piercing area was severely infected, with pus oozing from the wound.
The main cause was due to the unsanitary piercing procedure, not performed by a qualified professional. Subsequently, Mr. K was prescribed antibiotics and had to remove the piercing to treat the infection.
Similarly, female patient V.T.H, residing in Ho Chi Minh City, came to Lê Văn Thịnh Hospital for examination in a state of toothache in the lower jaw. After examination, the doctor found a round indentation on the inner surface of the lower jaw tooth.
Investigating the patient's medical history, the patient said that two years ago, she had pierced her tongue. This was also the reason for the tooth decay. The patient was then treated by extracting the pulp and crowning the tooth to prevent tooth breakage.
Dr. Nguyễn Quốc Việt - Deputy Head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery - Lê Văn Thịnh Hospital (TP. Thủ Đức, Ho Chi Minh City) said that in cases related to the teeth and jaw, when a piercing is attached to the body, it may cause some reactions such as loss of taste, change in taste, pus formation, and foul-smelling discharge at the piercing site.
Furthermore, in the long term, it will cause tooth decay (usually on the inner surface of the lower jaw teeth) causing toothache, loose teeth, and tooth breakage when subjected to strong impact.
Not only tongue piercing, recently, there have been many cases of infection complications after piercing the "private area".
TS.BS Trà Anh Duy - Men's Health Center, said that the facility has recently treated several cases of male patients infected due to piercing the penis.
The doctors do not recommend it due to safety factors and the risk of complications. However, if a person decides to pierce for personal preference, they should carefully consider and only be performed by experienced professionals in a sterile medical environment.
Because if the piercing is performed at a licensed medical facility or a licensed piercing store with a trained team, ensuring a sanitary procedure, it can avoid the risk of infection and prevent complications.
In addition, after piercing, it is essential to strictly follow the post-care instructions to avoid infection. If after piercing, symptoms such as swelling, redness, pain, or pus appear, seek medical attention immediately to receive timely treatment.
